Sony is expanding its ad-supported offerings by integrating over 100 FAST channels into PlayStation 5 consoles using Publica and PubMatic. Meanwhile, the European Commission has designated ChatGPT, Reddit, and Roblox as very large platforms under the Digital Services Act, mandating stricter risk assessments and ad transparency requirements.
Sony is shifting its strategy from hardware acquisition to aggressive monetization of its 125 million active users to offset rising console manufacturing costs. By integrating FAST channels directly into the console UI, Sony creates a high-intent environment for advertisers who struggle to reach gamers through traditional linear or CTV platforms. This move signals a broader trend of non-traditional video platforms, including gaming consoles and AI interfaces like ChatGPT, rapidly scaling ad infrastructure to capture shifting budgets. Watch for whether Sony’s anime-heavy content mix successfully converts high-engagement gamers into consistent ad-supported viewers without triggering user backlash against UI commercialization.
Sony's move into FAST channels on PlayStation 5 arrives amid intensifying competition for gaming-adjacent ad inventory. In March 2025, Microsoft expanded its ad-supported Xbox experience by integrating Pluto TV channels directly into the console dashboard, giving advertisers a comparable console-based CTV environment without requiring a separate streaming device. That competitive pressure underscores why Sony chose to build its own FAST layer rather than rely on third-party apps, and why the Publica and PubMatic partnership focuses on server-side ad insertion that keeps viewers inside the PlayStation interface. The broader CTV ad market is expected to reach $33 billion in global spend by end of 2026 according to WPP's GroupM forecast, with console-based viewing cited as one of the fastest-growing segments.
The regulatory dimension of this story is equally significant. The European Commission's designation of ChatGPT, Reddit, and Roblox as very large online platforms under the Digital Services Act in early 2025 means those services must now conduct independent risk assessments and provide ad transparency repositories within four months of designation. For Sony, the DSA creates a compliance template that could eventually apply to PlayStation Network if its monthly active users in the EU cross the 45 million threshold. The Commission has already opened formal proceedings against Meta and TikTok over addictive design features and ad transparency failures under the DSA, signaling that enforcement is moving beyond designation into active penalties. Sony's ad-supported expansion will need to account for these rules if it scales FAST channels to European PS5 users.
On the technical side, Publica's role in Sony's FAST launch reflects a broader shift toward unified ad stacks for non-traditional video surfaces. PubMatic reported in its Q2 2025 earnings call that CTV revenue grew 42% year over year, driven by gaming console and smart TV integrations, with the company citing PlayStation and Xbox inventory as key growth drivers. Meanwhile, OpenAI announced in May 2025 that it would begin testing ads within ChatGPT's free tier, a move that directly intersects with the DSA designation and raises questions about how AI platforms will handle ad transparency obligations. The convergence of gaming consoles, AI chatbots, and social platforms into ad-supported models suggests that the DSA's ad repository requirements will become a de facto standard for any surface reaching European audiences at scale.
