Sony Live TV on PS5 launches with 100 FAST channels

The launch of Sony Live TV on PS5 represents a strategic move to capture ad revenue from a gaming demographic that often bypasses traditional smart TV interfaces. By embedding a FAST service directly into the console, Sony creates a closed-loop ecosystem where it controls both the hardware and the ad inventory via Publica and PubMatic. This move places Sony in direct competition with platform-level FAST aggregators like Xumo and Samsung TV Plus, leveraging its ownership of Crunchyroll to differentiate through niche anime content. Watch for whether Sony expands this ad-supported model to include cloud-gaming integrations or international PlayStation markets.

Sony's entry into free ad-supported streaming television intensifies competition among console and platform-level FAST aggregators. Samsung TV Plus currently operates across 30 countries with more than 3,500 channels, and the platform expanded into gaming consoles and additional markets throughout 2025 and 2026 as part of its strategy to reach viewers beyond smart TVs. Xumo, the joint venture between Comcast and Charter, has similarly broadened its distribution footprint, partnering with device manufacturers and cable operators to embed its FAST channel lineup into third-party hardware rather than relying solely on its own streaming devices. Sony's decision to embed Live TV on PS5 directly into the console's Media tab mirrors this distribution-first approach, but with the added advantage of a captive gaming audience that spends extended sessions on the hardware.

On the monetization side, Sony's choice of Publica and PubMatic reflects a broader trend among FAST platforms seeking programmatic sophistication beyond basic ad insertion. PubMatic reported in its Q2 2026 earnings that connected TV revenue grew 34% year over year, driven largely by FAST channel inventory and gaming-adjacent environments. Publica, which was acquired by Nexxen in 2023, has positioned itself as a CTV-focused ad server that handles server-side ad insertion for live linear streams, a technical requirement for the kind of channel-surfing experience Sony is replicating. The ad-tech stack matters because Sony is targeting a demographic that traditional CTV measurement firms have struggled to reach; Nielsen noted in a June 2026 report that 18-to-34-year-old gamers remain undercounted in standard CTV audience panels, creating an incentive for advertisers to buy directly through console-native inventory.

Technically, delivering live linear channels through a gaming console presents distinct engineering challenges compared to smart TV or mobile FAST apps. The PlayStation 5's custom AMD Zen 2 processor and RDNA 2 GPU were designed for game rendering, not video transcoding, so Sony relies on server-side encoding and adaptive bitrate delivery to the console's media player. Xumo's engineering team described similar constraints when porting its FAST platform to lower-powered devices, noting that server-side ad insertion latency must stay under 500 milliseconds to avoid viewer drop-off during channel changes. Sony's partnership with Crunchyroll adds a content differentiator that no other FAST aggregator currently matches at scale; globally in early 2026, and including its library within a free tier gives Sony a retention hook that competitors like Samsung TV Plus and Xumo cannot replicate without licensing anime content at significant cost.
