Bridge Technologies adds Blackmagic IP10 codec support to VB440 probe

This integration provides a pragmatic bridge for broadcasters who require Ultra HD capabilities but lack the capital to overhaul existing 10GE network infrastructure. By supporting a license-free, open standard like IP10, Bridge Technologies reduces the financial and technical barriers to adopting ST 2110 workflows in remote production and OB truck environments. This move reinforces a shift toward interoperable, software-defined monitoring tools that replace heavy, power-hungry hardware stacks with single-unit appliances. Watch for adoption rates of IP10 among tier-two broadcasters and regional sports networks as a signal of how quickly 10GE infrastructure can be extended for high-resolution IP production.

Blackmagic Design's IP10 codec has been gaining momentum as a license-free alternative for high-bandwidth video transport over standard Ethernet. The codec, which compresses 10-bit 4:2:2 video at a 10:1 ratio, was designed to fit Ultra HD signals within 10 Gigabit Ethernet links, removing the need for costly 25GE or 200GE infrastructure upgrades. Bridge Technologies' decision to add IP10 support to the VB440 probe reflects a broader pattern of third-party tool vendors building around the codec to create interoperable ST 2110 ecosystems. Blackmagic Design introduced IP10 as an open, royalty-free codec at NAB Show 2025, positioning it as a practical path for broadcasters transitioning from SDI to IP without replacing their existing network switches. The business case for IP10 centers on its zero-licensing model, which contrasts sharply with proprietary compression schemes that require per-seat or per-device fees. Bridge Technologies CEO Simen Frostad has emphasized that the VB440's IP10 integration targets remote production and OB truck operators who need real-time monitoring without capital-intensive network overhauls. Bridge Technologies expanded its VB440 platform with additional protocol support in early 2026, reinforcing the probe's positioning as a multi-format monitoring tool for IP-based production environments. Meanwhile, Blackmagic Design has continued to push IP10 adoption through its own hardware ecosystem, including switchers and converters that natively encode and decode the format, creating a vertically integrated but open pipeline that third-party monitoring vendors can tap into. On the technical side, IP10's 10:1 compression ratio preserves visually lossless quality for 10-bit 4:2:2 signals, making it suitable for live production where artifact-free monitoring is critical. Blackmagic Design published specifications showing IP10 handles 4K60 at approximately 1.2 Gbps over a single 10GE link, leaving headroom for multiple streams on a single switch port. This compares favorably to uncompressed ST 2110, which requires roughly 12 Gbps for a single 4K60 stream and typically demands 25GE or higher infrastructure. For tier-two broadcasters and regional sports networks operating on constrained budgets, the ability to monitor multiple Ultra HD feeds on existing 10GE fabric represents a meaningful reduction in operational complexity and cost.
