BIG EAST Senior Associate Commissioner Scott Hecht discusses the evolution of university control rooms into network-grade production facilities. The conference is leveraging its media-rights partnerships to transition campus operations from basic game coverage to sophisticated, professional-level live production and storytelling.
The maturation of university-led broadcasts reduces the technical gap between school-produced content and traditional network truck productions. This shift allows the BIG EAST to scale its live event volume across multiple distribution partners without sacrificing the visual quality expected by national audiences. As these facilities become more sophisticated, they provide a cost-effective engine for generating the constant stream of original content required to support student-athlete NIL branding. Watch for whether other mid-major conferences adopt this high-spec control room model to secure better placement on tier-one streaming and linear platforms.
The BIG EAST's push toward professional-grade campus production mirrors a broader trend across collegiate athletics, where conferences are investing heavily in broadcast infrastructure to meet the demands of multi-platform media rights deals. In 2025, the Big 12 Conference announced a media rights agreement with Fox and ESPN that includes expanded streaming coverage across ESPN+, requiring member schools to elevate their production capabilities to network standards. The SEC similarly expanded its partnership with ESPN in 2024, committing to a production model where campus facilities handle a significant share of linear and streaming broadcasts, reducing reliance on traditional OB trucks for non-marquee events. These deals establish a template that mid-major conferences like the BIG EAST are now following, using campus control rooms as cost-efficient alternatives to full network productions.
The business case for campus-based production is increasingly tied to streaming economics and content volume. ESPN+ has expanded its college sports inventory to more than 3,000 live events per year across multiple conferences, creating demand for standardized production quality that conference-level facilities can deliver consistently. Fox Sports has similarly invested in remote production workflows for its college coverage, announcing in early 2026 that it would use IP-based contribution from campus facilities for select Big East and Big 12 basketball broadcasts, reducing travel costs while maintaining broadcast quality. NBC Sports has taken a parallel approach with its college football coverage, integrating campus-produced feeds into its linear and Peacock streaming schedules. The convergence of these strategies means conferences that can deliver network-quality output from their own facilities gain leverage in rights negotiations and secure more prominent scheduling slots.
On the technical side, the shift from basic campus coverage to network-grade production requires significant infrastructure upgrades in switching, replay, graphics, and audio mixing. Syracuse University completed a $4.2 million control room renovation in 2025, installing a Grass Valley GV Media Server and Sony HDC-3500 camera chain capable of producing simultaneous 1080p linear and 4K streaming outputs. The facility now supports multi-destination workflows that feed Fox linear broadcasts, ESPN+ streaming, and conference digital platforms from a single production. The Big East's media operations team reported a 40% increase in produced events between the 2023-24 and 2025-26 academic years, driven largely by the addition of Olympic sports and women's basketball coverage that previously received minimal production resources. This volume growth is only sustainable because campus facilities have absorbed production tasks that once required external vendors or network resources. As these schools scale, many broadcasters shift sports production REMI workflows to IP to offset costs.
BIG EAST universities are upgrading campus control rooms to professional, network-grade production facilities. This shift allows schools to manage complex workflows for linear television and streaming platforms like ESPN+ simultaneously. By closing the technical gap with traditional network trucks, the conference can scale live event volume and support student-athlete NIL branding.
The conference is upgrading facilities to meet the high production standards required by national media partners like Fox, NBC, and ESPN+, allowing for increased live event volume and better student-athlete exposure.
