AgileTV and Friend MTS have announced a pre-integrated solution combining the AgileTV CDN with Friend MTS' server-side watermarking technology. The partnership aims to provide operators with a streamlined workflow for forensic watermarking and real-time piracy response for premium live sports and entertainment content.
This integration addresses the critical latency requirements of live sports by moving forensic watermarking to the server side within the CDN architecture. By reducing the friction of deploying anti-piracy tools, AgileTV and Friend MTS are lowering the barrier for mid-tier operators to protect high-value rights that were previously vulnerable to rapid restreaming. This move reflects a broader industry shift toward automated, real-time enforcement as manual takedowns prove insufficient for the speed of modern piracy. Watch for IBC 2026 demonstration results to see if the session-token approach maintains video quality without increasing delivery overhead for high-concurrency events.
Friend MTS has been expanding its forensic watermarking footprint across multiple delivery platforms in recent months. In May 2026, Friend MTS announced a partnership with Synamedia to integrate its watermarking technology into Synamedia's VideoGuard platform, broadening its reach beyond CDN-level deployments into headend and middleware environments. That move positions Friend MTS as a cross-platform watermarking provider rather than a single-integration vendor, which strengthens the value proposition of the AgileTV CDN partnership by demonstrating the technology's portability across different operator architectures.
The commercial urgency behind watermarking integrations like AgileTV and Friend MTS is driven by the scale of live sports piracy losses. A 2025 report from the Alliance for Creativity and Entertainment estimated that illegal streaming of live sports costs rights holders more than $28 billion annually in lost revenue, with piracy streams often appearing within seconds of the legitimate broadcast. The European Commission's 2024 recommendation on combating online piracy of live sports events urged member states to implement real-time takedown mechanisms with a target response time of under 30 minutes, creating regulatory pressure for operators to adopt automated enforcement tools rather than relying on manual DMCA processes. Friend MTS's session-token approach, which embeds a unique identifier per viewer session at the CDN edge, is designed to meet those compressed response windows.
On the technical side, server-side watermarking within the CDN layer reduces the processing burden on operator-owned infrastructure compared to client-side solutions. NAGRA demonstrated its own CDN-integrated watermarking approach at IBC 2025, claiming sub-50ms added latency for 4K HDR streams, setting a performance benchmark that competitors including Friend MTS are expected to match or exceed. The AgileTV CDN integration follows a similar architecture, embedding watermarks at the origin or edge server before content reaches the end user, which eliminates the need for client-side processing that can degrade viewer experience on lower-powered devices. Friend MTS previously reported that its watermarking system had been deployed to protect more than 500 million live streams across sports and entertainment events, providing a scale reference for operators evaluating the technology's readiness for high-concurrency events such as major football leagues or pay-per-view boxing.
