Ikegami announced a series of updates to its UNICAM camera ecosystem ahead of IBC2026, including new variable neutral-density filters, OLED viewfinders, and expanded remote production control tools. The showcase will focus on high-frame-rate and IP-based studio hardware, including new monitoring and control interfaces.
The introduction of constant-aperture variable-ND filters solves a persistent technical friction point in live sports and high-end studio production by decoupling exposure control from depth of field. By integrating these optical refinements with OLED monitoring and high-density control panels, Ikegami is targeting the efficiency needs of outside broadcast (OB) operators managing increasingly crowded production trucks. This move reinforces the industry shift toward software-defined control and IP-based monitoring, where hardware must support both legacy baseband and emerging ST 2110 workflows. Watch for whether these internal ND features become a standard requirement for rival 2/3-inch UHD camera systems at upcoming trade shows.
The expansion of the UNICAM lineup arrives as Ikegami marks its 80th anniversary in 2026, a year characterized by aggressive global hardware deployments. In early 2026, Korean broadcaster SBS Medianet invested in 32 UHK-X700 camera chains to support its transition to 4K-UHD HDR production, per TV Technology (March 2026). Similarly, Asian-Pacific broadcasters like Two Wheels Motor Racing and Vietnam's VTV5 have recently integrated UNICAM systems to modernize their sports and live event capabilities, according to reporting from TM Broadcast (May 2026).
Technically, the move toward internal variable-ND filters reflects a broader industry push to simplify complex field optics. While traditional ND wheels offer fixed steps (e.g., 1/4, 1/16, 1/64), the continuously variable implementation allows for granular exposure ramps during live transitions between sunlight and shade without the visible "stepping" of physical wheels. This mirrors trends seen in digital cinema cameras from Sony and Blackmagic, now migrating into the high-end broadcast tier to support more cinematic live aesthetics.
On the infrastructure side, Ikegami’s emphasis on the IPX-100 base station aligns with the accelerating adoption of SMPTE ST 2110 standards. Per The Broadcast Bridge (April 2026), the IPX-100 is designed to bridge the gap for creators adopting remote production (REMI) models by allowing conventional hybrid fiber to interface directly with IP-based facility cores. This hybrid approach is critical for legacy facilities that are not yet ready for a total "forklift upgrade" to all-IP hardware but require 4K-native signals for future-proofing their content libraries.
