DJI Osmo 360 II launch confirms 8K60 video and square sensors

The introduction of 1-inch square HDR sensors represents a technical shift toward maximizing pixel data for spherical capture, potentially setting a new benchmark for prosumer 360-degree hardware. By integrating D-Log M and 10-bit color across all formats, DJI is positioning this device as a viable tool for professional VR and immersive content workflows rather than just action sports. Within the broader ecosystem, the lack of official U.S. availability remains a significant hurdle for North American creators, though the inclusion of DJI Reframe for DaVinci Resolve suggests a focus on high-end post-production integration. DJI's push into 360-degree capture places it in direct competition with established players who have dominated the prosumer and professional immersive video segments. The Insta360 X5, launched in April 2025, introduced dual 1/1.28-inch sensors with 8K30 recording and FlowState stabilization, quickly becoming the benchmark for consumer 360 cameras. Meanwhile, GoPro's MAX 2, announced in early 2026, added 8K30 spherical capture with a new dual-lens optical design and in-camera stitching improvements, targeting the action-sports segment that DJI has historically served with its Osmo Action line. The Osmo 360 II's dual 1-inch square sensors represent a meaningful step up in sensor area compared with both rivals, though real-world image quality comparisons have not yet been published. On the business side, DJI faces regulatory and market-access headwinds that could limit the Osmo 360 II's commercial reach. The U.S. Federal Communications Commission added DJI to its covered list in December 2025, citing national security concerns that restrict new equipment authorizations for the Chinese manufacturer. That designation does not ban the sale of previously authorized products but creates uncertainty around future firmware updates and new model certifications in the American market. DJI's decision to omit U.S. availability at launch aligns with this regulatory posture. In Europe and Asia, where the camera is confirmed for September 15 availability, DJI retains full distribution through its existing retail and e-commerce channels without comparable restrictions. From a technical standpoint, the Osmo 360 II's square sensor architecture addresses a long-standing inefficiency in 360-degree imaging. Traditional rectangular sensors waste peripheral pixel data when projecting onto a spherical surface, a problem that researchers at the Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers documented in a 2024 paper on sensor utilization for immersive capture. DJI claims its square format recovers approximately 25% more usable pixel area per frame. The inclusion of DJI Reframe as a plugin for DaVinci Resolve signals an intent to integrate with professional post-production pipelines, a strategy that Avid Media Composer 2026.8 pioneered with its own Studio software and Adobe Premiere integration starting in 2023. Whether DJI can match that ecosystem depth will depend on third-party adoption and the quality of its reframing algorithms under real production conditions.
