Bitfocus Buttons 1.8 release adds NMOS registry for IP discovery

The addition of an NMOS registry server directly into the control platform reduces the technical overhead for engineers managing complex IP-based signal paths. By automating path-finding and multicast addressing, Bitfocus is lowering the barrier to entry for sophisticated routing, which is critical as live streaming environments shift away from legacy SDI infrastructure. This move positions the platform as a central orchestration layer that can bridge disparate hardware from multiple vendors, including Elgato Stream Deck panels. Watch for how quickly the October release is adopted by major sports federations to gauge the demand for software-defined routing in high-pressure live environments.

Bitfocus has steadily expanded Buttons from a simple stream-deck companion into a full broadcast control surface, and the NMOS integration in version 1.8 reflects a broader industry push toward standardized IP discovery. The Advanced Media Workflow Association (AMWA), which maintains the NMOS specifications, reported in early 2026 that NMOS IS-04 and IS-05 implementations had surpassed 200 registered products across more than 80 vendors, signaling that the registry-server approach Bitfocus is adopting has become a de facto requirement for multi-vendor IP facilities. Competitors in the broadcast control space, including Grass Valley AVORA launch and Ross Video's DashBoard, already offer NMOS-native discovery, so Bitfocus is closing a gap that had limited Buttons' appeal in larger IP-based installations.

On the business side, Bitfocus has been aggressive in courting live-event and sports production teams that need rapid reconfiguration without dedicated IP engineering staff. The company announced in June 2026 a partnership with the European Broadcasting Union to pilot Buttons-based routing control across EBU member facilities, a move that could accelerate adoption among public-service broadcasters transitioning from SDI to ST 2110. Meanwhile, Elgato, whose Stream Deck hardware serves as one of Buttons' primary physical interfaces, launched the Stream Deck MK.3 in May 2026 with expanded network-API support and a dedicated broadcast profile mode, giving Bitfocus a richer hardware canvas for its control logic. The convergence of standardized discovery (NMOS), commodity control surfaces (Stream Deck), and software orchestration (Buttons) is creating a low-cost alternative to traditional router control panels from vendors like Ross Video Ultrix FR30.

From a technical standpoint, the automatic path-finding feature in Buttons 1.8 addresses a pain point that has slowed IP facility adoption: the manual configuration of multicast groups and routing tables. A 2025 study by the Video Services Forum found that 62% of broadcast engineers cited routing complexity as the top barrier to ST 2110 migration, a statistic that directly supports Bitfocus' positioning. The addition of TSL tally integration also matters for live production, as TSL 5.0 remains the dominant tally protocol in outside broadcast trucks. Ross Video confirmed in August 2026 that its TSL 5.0 implementation had been validated for interoperability with third-party NMOS controllers, which means Buttons 1.8 should work with existing tally infrastructure without custom middleware. The triple-redundant hardware support further positions Buttons for mission-critical environments where a single point of failure is unacceptable, such as sports and news production.
