The Alliance for IP Media Solutions (AIMS) and the Video Services Forum (VSF) have launched an official IPMX certification program, with 48 initial products verified at ISE 2026. The program standardizes interoperability for Pro AV-over-IP workflows using SMPTE ST 2110 foundations, JPEG XS compression, and NMOS control.
The transition from 'IPMX Ready' to 'IPMX Certified' provides the verified interoperability required for large-scale enterprise and broadcast deployments. By decoupling video, audio, and control streams via open standards, IPMX reduces the industry's reliance on proprietary AV-over-IP ecosystems that often lead to vendor lock-in. For broadcasters, the standard's support for asynchronous operation lowers the capital threshold for IP migration in regional stations and mobile units. The inclusion of JPEG XS compression is particularly critical, as it enables 4Kp60 4:4:4 transport over existing 1G and 2.5G copper infrastructure. Watch for the adoption rate of the 'virtual ASIC' implementation in high-volume edge devices like wall plates and HDMI dongles through 2027.
The push for IPMX arrives as the Pro AV industry seeks a unified alternative to established but fragmented protocols like NDI, SDVoE, and Dante AV. Per Commercial Integrator (February 2026), the lack of a single open standard has historically forced integrators to manage complex translation gateways, increasing both latency and failure points in high-stakes environments like surgical suites and command centers. The debut of the IPMX certification program is intended to mirror the success of the SMPTE ST 2110 suite in the broadcast world, providing a rigorous compliance framework that ensures equipment from disparate vendors can coexist on a shared network fabric.
Market analysis from Omdia in late 2025 suggested that the move toward software-defined AV would accelerate the obsolescence of dedicated matrix switchers. By leveraging JPEG XS for visually lossless compression, IPMX aligns with the broader industry trend of utilizing standard off-the-shelf Ethernet switches for media distribution. According to Sound & Communications (March 2026), the inclusion of HDCP and Privacy Encryption Protocol (PEP) in the IPMX roadmap is a direct response to the security requirements of government and healthcare sectors, which have previously been hesitant to move highly sensitive video data onto open IP networks without standardized encryption verified by an independent authority.
