Video Village secures exclusive LensNode 2 plugin distribution and NLE support

The exclusive distribution deal shifts LensNode 2 from a niche tool for DaVinci Resolve into a broader post-production ecosystem by adding support for Adobe and Apple platforms. By centralizing licensing and installation through the Video Village Plugins app, the partnership professionalizes the delivery of high-end optical simulations for editors and colorists. This move reflects a growing trend of specialized developers partnering with established distributors to manage the overhead of multi-platform licensing and updates. Watch for the upcoming release of anamorphic simulation and user presets to see if the plugin can capture a larger share of the high-end virtual cinematography market.

Video Village has built a reputation as a curated distribution hub for specialized post-production plugins, and the LensNode 2 partnership extends that model into the lens-simulation category. The company's plugin marketplace already carries tools from developers working in color grading, compositing, and visual effects, positioning it as a gateway for niche software reaching professional editors. Node Mill, the developer behind LensNode, has focused on physically accurate optical modeling that replicates real-world lens characteristics including bokeh shape, chromatic aberration, and field curvature. The move to exclusive distribution through Video Village mirrors a broader pattern in the post-production tools market where small developers rely on established platforms for licensing infrastructure and multi-NLE compatibility testing rather than managing those logistics independently. The competitive landscape for lens-simulation and virtual cinematography plugins has intensified as demand grows for realistic optical effects without physical lens rentals. Boris FX's BCC+ Lens Blur filter emulates defocus and rack-focus effects where out-of-focus highlights take on the shape of the lens diaphragm, offering bokeh simulation with depth-of-field control through Z-Depth maps and ML depth estimation. The Sapphire plugin suite from Boris FX includes S_AdvancedDefocus, which generates defocused imagery using circle-of-confusion convolution with controllable iris shape, pointiness, and rotation parameters, along with lens vignette simulation and matte box artifact rendering. These tools compete for the same post-production budgets as LensNode 2, though LensNode differentiates by building its library from 111+ real lens profiles captured from physical optics rather than generating synthetic blur shapes. On the technical side, the 16-bit processing mode introduced in LensNode 2 addresses a known limitation in GPU-accelerated plugins where 8-bit or 10-bit pipelines introduce banding in smooth gradients, particularly visible in skin tones and sky elements. Adobe's Camera Lens Blur effect in After Effects simulates depth of field using blur maps and iris properties to mimic real camera behavior, providing baseline bokeh rendering natively within the application but without the specific lens-profile matching that LensNode offers. The expansion to Adobe Premiere, After Effects, Final Cut Pro, and FilmLight Baselight means LensNode 2 now covers the dominant NLE and grading platforms used in professional post-production, while remains the primary environment where colorists apply lens characteristics during the grading stage.
