Nexus has provided a technical update on its forthcoming G1 cinema camera, confirming the integration of the CINAF sensor-fusion autofocus system and a standard U-Mount lens system. The camera, which utilizes components similar to the Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 6K, is currently undergoing manufacturing validation.
The G1 project represents a specialized push to bridge the gap between mirrorless ergonomics and high-end box camera functionality for solo operators. By integrating LiDAR-based autofocus that works with manual lenses, Nexus is addressing a critical pain point in the Blackmagic ecosystem: the lack of reliable internal continuous autofocus. This move pressures mid-market competitors like Z Cam and Blackmagic's own Pyxis by offering features usually reserved for higher-priced rigs. Watch for the next update to confirm a firm shipping date, which will signal whether the company can successfully transition from prototype validation to volume manufacturing.
The Nexus G1 originated as a custom modification project by Thomas and Timothy Boland to repackage the Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 6K into a more production-ready box form factor. While the project initially targeted a 2024 launch, it has faced multiple setbacks due to engineering challenges related to high-speed signal routing and the complexities of manufacturing 200 unique parts. Per CineD in December 2025, the founders clarified that while the camera uses Blackmagic’s sensor and mainboard, it is a significant ground-up redesign involving aerospace-grade magnesium alloy and carbon fiber.
Market competition in the affordable box camera segment has intensified since the G1's initial announcement. Blackmagic Design released its own box-style camera, the Pyxis 6K, in early 2024, which lacks the internal ND filters and integrated LiDAR autofocus promised by the G1. Additionally, per No Film School in January 2026, the shift toward LiDAR-based focus systems has become a broader trend in the industry, evidenced by DJI's expansion of its RS Focus Motor and LiDAR Range Finder ecosystems. Nexus aims to differentiate itself by embedding these capabilities directly into the camera’s OS and hardware stack.
The project maintains a unique relationship with its primary component supplier. According to RedShark News in December 2024, the G1 project has the formal blessing of Blackmagic Design despite competing directly with some of their native hardware. This authorized-dealer status allows Nexus to source internals officially, though the G1's success still hinges on its ability to deliver its proprietary software, NexusOS, and the now-standardized U-Mount system to early Founders Edition backers who have been waiting since the initial 2025 preorder window.
