Insta360 has launched the Luna Pro, a single-lens gimbal camera featuring a 1-inch CMOS sensor and 8K30 recording capabilities, in the Chinese market for ¥3,399. The device is positioned as a lower-cost alternative to the Luna Ultra and is expected to eventually reach the US market.
The introduction of the Luna Pro provides a high-spec alternative for mobile creators in the US market, where DJI's Osmo Pocket series faces increasing import restrictions. By retaining the 1-inch sensor and Leica color science from the Ultra model at a lower price point, Insta360 is positioning itself to capture the mid-range vlogging segment. This move signals a shift toward professional-grade optics in compact, single-lens form factors for social-first video production. Watch for the official US pricing and release date to determine how aggressively Insta360 will compete with existing handheld stabilization hardware.
The compact gimbal camera segment has become a crowded battlefield as multiple manufacturers push into the creator-economy hardware space. DJI's Osmo Pocket 3, released in late 2023, dominated the category with its 1-inch sensor and 4K120 capabilities, but DJI announced the Osmo Pocket 4 in early 2025 with upgraded stabilization and a wider field of view targeting professional vloggers and documentary shooters. Insta360's entry with the Luna series represents the first serious challenge to DJI's near-monopoly in the single-lens gimbal camera form factor, particularly as the Shenzhen-based company has built brand recognition through its 360-degree camera line since 2015.
The competitive dynamics are further complicated by US trade policy affecting Chinese electronics imports. DJI was added to the US Commerce Department's Entity List restrictions in December 2024, limiting its ability to source certain components and raising questions about future product availability in North America. This regulatory pressure creates an opening for Insta360, which has maintained separate supply chain relationships and continues to sell freely in US retail channels. Leica's involvement as an optics partner across the Luna lineup adds a premium positioning layer that DJI has not matched with an equivalent luxury optics collaboration in its Pocket series.
On the technical side, independent testing of gimbal cameras has increasingly focused on low-light performance and AI tracking accuracy as differentiators. DPReview's comparison of 1-inch sensor gimbal cameras published in March 2025 found that sensor size and computational photography algorithms produced more meaningful image quality differences than mechanical stabilization alone, suggesting that Insta360's emphasis on its AI-driven subject tracking and Leica color profiles may resonate with buyers evaluating the Luna Pro against the Osmo Pocket 4. The 8K30 recording capability in the Luna Pro also positions it ahead of DJI's current Pocket lineup, which tops out at 4K120, giving Insta360 a resolution advantage for creators who need future-proofing or cropping flexibility in post-production workflows. For users looking to manage their footage, a recent DJI Osmo Pocket firmware update now adds direct cloud and NAS uploads to streamline these workflows.
