ESPN successfully deployed a RedZone-branded whiparound production for the US Open, marking the first time the NFL-licensed IP was used for a non-football event. The production utilized a REMI workflow managed from Bristol, leveraging existing app-based ingest feeds to provide point-to-point coverage across 16 courts.
The deployment of the RedZone brand for tennis demonstrates how ESPN intends to maximize its equity deal with the NFL by applying proven engagement models to other high-volume sporting events. By shifting to a REMI workflow and utilizing existing app feeds, ESPN proved it can produce high-cadence whiparound content without a massive increase in on-site infrastructure. This move signals a shift in how rights holders manage fragmented early-round action, moving away from static court feeds toward curated, high-intensity viewing experiences. Watch for ESPN to apply this branding to other multi-court or multi-field properties like NCAA championships or golf majors to drive ESPN App engagement.
ESPN has been steadily building out its whiparound and multi-court production capabilities, with the US Open representing a significant escalation in scope. The network's existing relationship with the USTA dates back decades, and the tournament's 16-court layout at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center provides one of the most complex multi-feed environments in live sports. ESPN's broader production strategy has increasingly leaned on REMI workflows to centralize operations in Bristol, Connecticut, reducing on-site footprint while maintaining editorial control over distributed feeds. The NFL RedZone brand, originally launched by NFL Network in 2009, has become one of the most recognized multi-event viewing formats in American sports television, and ESPN's licensing agreement with the NFL allows the brand to be applied across ESPN's platforms under terms negotiated as part of the network's broader rights deals. The competitive landscape for multi-event sports streaming is intensifying as platforms seek to differentiate through format innovation rather than rights exclusivity alone. Nokia and Google Cloud announced at DTW IGNITE 2026 a partnership deploying six specialized AI agents for network operations, claiming 50% to 80% reductions in problem-solving times, which illustrates the broader infrastructure investments streaming platforms are making to support real-time multi-feed production at scale. For ESPN specifically, the challenge of delivering simultaneous court coverage to millions of concurrent viewers on the ESPN App requires backend infrastructure capable of handling rapid feed switching and low-latency delivery. The network's decision to use existing app-based ingest feeds rather than building dedicated production trucks for each court reflects a cost-efficiency model that could be replicated across other multi-venue events like ESPN WNBA playoff production or golf majors. Technical execution of whiparound formats depends heavily on the underlying video delivery and switching architecture. Ericsson launched its AI in RAN commercial software subscription in June 2026, claiming up to 20% higher downlink throughput across more than 15 live deployments, which is relevant to the mobile delivery infrastructure that supports app-based streaming of live sports content. For ESPN's RedZone-style productions, the ability to rapidly switch between 16 simultaneous court feeds while maintaining broadcast-quality output requires both low-latency encoding and intelligent routing systems. The REMI model ESPN employed for this production centralizes switching decisions in Bristol, allowing producers to monitor all courts simultaneously and make editorial decisions in real time without the latency penalties of traditional on-site production. This architecture positions ESPN to scale the format to events with even more simultaneous feeds, such as the 68-team NCAA Tournament or multi-course golf coverage.
ESPN debuted its RedZone whiparound coverage for the US Open, marking the first non-football use of the NFL-licensed brand. By utilizing a REMI workflow from its Bristol campus, ESPN provided curated, high-intensity coverage across 16 courts, demonstrating a scalable model for managing fragmented, multi-venue sporting events without increasing on-site infrastructure.

ESPN used a REMI workflow managed from its Bristol, Connecticut campus. The production leveraged existing app-based ingest feeds, which eliminated the need for additional transmission lines or dedicated production trucks for each court.
The broadcast featured a rotating roster of talent rather than a single host, including Andy Roddick, Caroline Wozniacki, and Genie Bouchard.
The broadcast operated daily from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. between August 30 and September 4.
