Qvest Dynamic Media Facility showcase debuts multi-vendor software-defined production blueprint

This demonstration signals a shift from theoretical architectural concepts to functional, multi-vendor implementations of the EBU’s DMF framework. By decoupling production software from proprietary hardware, broadcasters can significantly increase infrastructure utilization rates across disparate workflows. The collaboration between eleven major vendors, including Netgear and Telestream, validates the interoperability of MXL and ST 2110 in a live environment. This move pressures traditional hardware vendors to accelerate their transition toward containerized media functions and cloud-native services. Watch for the first commercial deployment of this specific DMF implementation in customer environments following the IBC showcase.

The push toward software-defined broadcast facilities has accelerated across the industry, with multiple vendors and standards bodies converging on shared-resource architectures. The European Broadcasting Union's Dynamic Media Facility framework, which Qvest is implementing at IBC 2026, builds on SMPTE ST 2110 for media transport and the newer MXL standard for resource orchestration. Ericsson and Nokia are diverging on AI-RAN architectures, with Nokia building its entire RAN strategy on Nvidia GPUs and CUDA, illustrating how the broader shift toward commodity compute and software-defined infrastructure is reshaping adjacent technology stacks beyond broadcast. The DMF concept mirrors this trajectory in media: replacing purpose-built appliances with pooled, schedulable resources that can be allocated on demand.

Nokia's aggressive push into agentic AI and autonomous network operations provides a useful parallel for understanding the business dynamics at play. Nokia announced partnerships with AWS and Databricks at DTW Ignite 2026 to build a unified data and cloud control layer for autonomous networks, claiming operators are already achieving automation rates above 90 percent and service delivery times under four hours. That same logic of consolidating fragmented systems onto a common orchestration fabric is precisely what Qvest's DMF showcase aims to demonstrate for media production: a single control plane managing heterogeneous vendor workloads across shared compute. Ericsson similarly launched a cloud-first agentic AI blueprint with more than 20 cloud-native AI applications across OSS and BSS functions, running on Amazon Bedrock and positioned as a vendor-led framework for autonomous operations. These moves underscore that multi-vendor orchestration on commodity infrastructure is becoming the dominant architectural pattern across network and media operations alike.

On the technical side, the cluster of AI-driven automation announcements in mid-2026 signals that the industry is moving from isolated pilots to production-grade deployments. Ericsson launched its AI in RAN commercial software subscription on June 11, 2026, claiming up to 20 percent higher downlink throughput across more than 15 live deployments, while Verizon disclosed that its 60,000-site vRAN is applying agentic AI to configuration changes and service assurance. Verizon also publicly called for industry-wide interoperability standards for agentic systems, highlighting a gap that mirrors the interoperability challenges Qvest's multi-vendor DMF showcase is designed to address. The absence of standardized protocols for cross-vendor command and control remains a bottleneck in both telecom and broadcast, making live demonstrations like IBC 2026 sports technology showcase a critical proof point for the viability of open, software-defined production environments.
