The Joint Task Force on the Dynamic Media Facility (JT-DMF), led by AMWA and the EBU, is hosting expert sessions at IBC2026 to discuss the transition from ST 2110 transport to compute-efficient, agile media infrastructure. The initiative focuses on developing an interoperable roadmap for the Media eXchange Layer (MXL) to address operational requirements for broadcasters and technology vendors.
The shift toward a Dynamic Media Facility (DMF) represents a move beyond simple IP transport toward fully virtualized, compute-centric operations. By establishing the Media eXchange Layer (MXL), AMWA and the EBU are attempting to standardize how software-defined resources are managed, reducing the friction of proprietary vendor silos. For the broader streaming ecosystem, this transition is essential for organizations facing pressure to scale content output with fewer physical resources. As broadcasters like Paramount and Disney-ABC participate in these working groups, the industry moves closer to a unified architectural standard for live production. Watch for the release of specific MXL technical specifications following the IBC2026 feedback sessions to gauge vendor adoption rates.
The Media eXchange Layer initiative sits within a broader push by AMWA and the EBU to move broadcast infrastructure beyond ST 2110 transport toward software-defined, compute-efficient architectures. AMWA has previously driven standards such as NMOS (Networked Media Open Specifications), which underpin ST 2110 device discovery and registration, and the organization continues to coordinate with SMPTE on interoperability frameworks for IP-based media. The EBU published a technical review in early 2026 outlining how broadcasters can transition from hardware-centric signal routing to cloud-native media processing pipelines, positioning the DMF concept as the logical next step after ST 2110 adoption. Multiple vendors including Grass Valley, Lawo, and Riedel have signaled alignment with the MXL direction by participating in AMWA working groups and demonstrating interoperability at recent industry events.
On the business and standards side, the DMF initiative intersects with ongoing efforts to reduce vendor lock-in and lower total cost of ownership for broadcasters migrating to IP. Paramount and Disney-ABC have both contributed operational requirements to the JT-DMF working group, reflecting broadcaster demand for multi-vendor agility in live production environments. The EBU's involvement carries regulatory weight in Europe, where public broadcasters such as SVT and CBC are evaluating MXL-compatible architectures for their next-generation facility builds. BFE and Lawo, both prominent in broadcast control systems, have indicated that their orchestration platforms will need to support MXL abstractions to remain relevant as the standard matures.
From a technical standpoint, the MXL specification targets the gap between ST 2110's media transport layer and the application-level compute resources that process, transform, and route media streams. Matrox Video ORIGIN platform targets distributed media workflows at IBC2026, showing sub-second resource reallocation across virtualized media functions running on commodity COTS hardware. Arista Networks, which supplies the underlying IP fabric for many ST 2110 deployments, has published guidance on how leaf-spine topologies must evolve to support the dynamic workload scheduling that MXL implies. Sony and Appear have also contributed to early MXL interoperability testing, with Sony focusing on camera-to-cloud signal paths and Appear on edge processing for live contribution. The technical challenge remains significant: MXL must define clean interfaces for resource discovery, capability advertisement, and media handoff without imposing latency penalties that would break real-time production workflows.
