Emmy-winning editor Kelly Lyon details the post-production workflow for the Disney+ Muppet Show special, which utilized Avid Media Composer and Adobe After Effects. The project focused on replicating the aesthetic of the original variety series while managing complex technical challenges like puppet eyelines and simulated live-audience reactions.
The technical execution of this special demonstrates the high bar for reviving legacy IP in the streaming era, where editors must balance 2026 pacing expectations with 50-year-old aesthetic traditions. By utilizing a hybrid of Avid and Adobe tools to solve puppet-specific challenges like eyeline tracking and simulated laughter, the team proved that high-end post-production can bridge the gap between physical puppetry and modern digital standards. This workflow highlights a growing trend where streaming variety content requires the precision of scripted drama to maintain brand consistency. Watch for whether these specialized puppet-editing techniques become standardized as Disney expands its legacy character catalog on the platform.
Avid Media Composer remains the dominant editing platform for high-end streaming variety and comedy specials, even as Adobe After Effects gains ground for compositing and visual effects work. In early 2026, Avid Media Composer bin locking reported that Media Composer was used on more than 70% of Emmy-nominated editing projects across broadcast and streaming categories, reinforcing its position as the default choice for editors working on multi-camera and live-audience formats. The Muppet Show special's reliance on this hybrid Avid-Adobe pipeline reflects a broader pattern in streaming post-production where editors combine Media Composer's timeline precision with After Effects' compositing capabilities to solve format-specific challenges.
Disney+ has invested heavily in legacy IP revivals as a subscriber retention strategy, and the technical quality of these productions has become a competitive differentiator. The Muppet Show special drew 4.2 million streaming views in its first week on Disney+, according to Disney's internal metrics shared with advertisers, making it one of the platform's top-performing variety events of the year. That viewership pressure raises the stakes for post-production teams like Lyon's, who must deliver broadcast-quality output on compressed streaming timelines. Disney announced in May 2026 that it would greenlight three additional Muppet-branded specials through 2027, signaling that the workflow Lyon helped establish will need to scale.
The technical challenges of editing puppet-based content have drawn attention from the broader post-production community. At the 2026 NAB Show, Avid demonstrated new Media Composer features for multi-camera synchronization and eyeline correction that were developed in collaboration with editors working on puppet and animation projects, directly addressing the kind of challenges Lyon described with Muppet eyelines. Adobe, meanwhile, released After Effects 25.3 in June 2026 with improved rotoscoping and motion-tracking tools that reduce manual frame-by-frame cleanup by up to 40%, which is relevant for compositing puppet characters against live-action backgrounds. These tool improvements suggest that the specialized techniques Lyon employed on The Muppet Show special may become more accessible to smaller production teams as the software matures.
