PlayBox Technology explains the architectural requirements for transitioning broadcast infrastructures from SDI to IP. The article highlights the roles of SMPTE ST 2110, NMOS, JPEG XS, and NDI in enabling software-defined, remotely manageable, and AI-integrated production workflows.
The transition to IP is an architectural pivot that enables the broadcast stack to function as a dynamic computing platform rather than a static hardware chain. For the streaming ecosystem, this shift is critical for supporting the multi-format demands of FAST, social, and mobile platforms simultaneously from a single production source. By decoupling media from dedicated physical paths, broadcasters can finally scale operations via cloud-native tools and AI-driven automation. Watch for the increasing integration of NMOS across commodity IT switching hardware as a signal of mature multi-vendor interoperability.
The transition from Serial Digital Interface (SDI) to IP-based production is accelerating as broadcasters look to modernize legacy facilities. According to Haivision’s 2026 Broadcast Transformation Report, while 82% of professionals still leverage SDI, approximately 39% now identify the transition to IP as their primary technology priority. This shift is reflected in the broadcast switcher market, where IP-based ports are projected to grow from a 22.4% share in 2025 to 31.7% by 2034, per DataIntelo reporting in May 2026. Despite this growth, SDI is expected to retain nearly 38% of the market through 2034, cementing hybrid environments as the standard operational reality for the next decade. Technological milestones are further validating IP’s readiness for high-stakes production. In 2025, SMPTE ST 2110 received a Television Academy Engineering Emmy Award, highlighting its impact on media synchronization. Real-world applications have also scaled; for instance, Media Links utilized JPEG XS compression to transport hundreds of feeds during the 2024 Paris Olympics at bit rates between 150 and 425 Mbits/sec, per company reporting. This follows a broader industry trend where uncompressed or lightly compressed video transport over 25 GigE and 100 GigE IP networks is replacing single-link 12G-SDI cables to handle the massive bandwidth required for 4K and 8K production. Financial and operational incentives are also driving the pivot. Mordor Intelligence reports that the global broadcast infrastructure market is shifting toward services, which are projected to grow at a 9.89% CAGR through 2030 as stations prioritize operating expenses over heavy capital outlays for hardware. Cloud providers are capitalizing on this; per IBC 2024 reports, approximately 60% of broadcasters planned to implement cloud workflows by 2026. Furthermore, a 2024 SMPTE study noted that IP-based studios can achieve up to 15% energy savings compared to traditional SDI setups, aligning infrastructure upgrades with corporate sustainability initiatives.
