Appear and Thoroughbred Racing Productions (TRP) successfully completed a proof-of-concept trial for remote production (REMI) using bonded 5G and LEO satellite links. The workflow utilized Appear's X5 and X20 platforms to transport four HEVC-encoded camera feeds and two return feeds, demonstrating a viable alternative to fixed fiber infrastructure for regional venues.
This successful deployment confirms that bonded cellular and LEO satellite links have reached the reliability threshold required for professional multi-camera sports broadcasting. By removing the dependency on expensive fixed fiber installations, rights holders can significantly lower the cost of entry for live coverage at tier-2 and tier-3 venues. The use of hardware-accelerated SRT over public networks provides a scalable blueprint for broadcasters looking to centralize production hubs while expanding their event portfolios. As LEO constellations mature, the industry should monitor if TRP transitions its remaining 31 regional racecourses to this wireless REMI model permanently, potentially signaling a broader shift away from dedicated terrestrial contribution circuits.
Appear's X Platform has rapidly become a cornerstone of large-scale remote production deployments in live sports. In April 2026, Fox Sports selected Appear as a strategic technology partner to support remote production, premium live events, and large-scale IP workflows, with the rollout spanning three pillars of its production infrastructure: a refresh of Home Run Productions (HRP) REMI systems, a standards-based IP workflow for a major global soccer event in the Americas, and the broadcaster's Jewel Events system for its highest-profile national broadcasts. The X20 handles core remote and premium production environments while the X5 supports distributed commentator workflows, mirroring the same platform pairing used in the TRP racing trial.
The scale of Appear's deployment was tested during the 2026 FIFA World Cup, where Fox Sports relied on the platform as its primary contribution infrastructure. Fox Sports used the Appear platform for all contribution feeds during the tournament, shifting from unicast to multicast transmission to reduce latency, enabling a single encoder to feed multiple decoders simultaneously without intermediate re-encoding. Kevin Callahan, Fox Sports' senior vice president of field operations, confirmed that future HRP productions would transition from JPEG XS to HEVC compression for greater bandwidth efficiency, the same codec used in the TRP trial over bonded 5G and LEO links. TVBEurope reported that Fox Sports built its World Cup workflow around SMPTE ST 2110 and JPEG XS using X20 systems in core environments and X5 systems for commentator feeds, demonstrating how a single platform family can serve both fiber-connected venues and bandwidth-constrained scenarios.
The technical validation from these deployments underscores why Appear's hardware is being applied to increasingly challenging connectivity environments. TV Tech reported that Fox Sports leaned on its upgraded HRP REMI infrastructure during the World Cup, with JPEG XS encoding from Appear supporting low-latency feeds from venues back to control rooms in Los Angeles, while BRISK flypacks integrated ST 2110-based workflows at each venue. The progression from fiber-connected stadiums to bonded 5G and LEO satellite at regional racecourses represents a logical extension of the same platform architecture into environments where fixed contribution circuits are unavailable, positioning Appear as a vendor capable of serving both tier-one and tier-three production scenarios with identical hardware.
