Big Blue Marble will demonstrate a hybrid delivery system at IBC2026 that enables seamless switching between 5G Broadcast and Media over QUIC (MoQ). The demonstration will also showcase an end-to-end implementation of 3GPP Release 19 features and enhanced emergency warning capabilities using the Nakolos platform.
The integration of 5G Broadcast with Media over QUIC addresses the primary hurdle for terrestrial mobile video: maintaining session continuity without wasting broadband capacity. By using broadcast for mass-audience scale and MoQ for targeted, low-latency failover, operators can theoretically support high-concurrency live sports while reducing the load on congested unicast networks. This technical development signals a shift toward more resilient mobile video architectures that do not rely solely on traditional cellular data. Watch for the commercial adoption rates of 3GPP Release 19 features among device manufacturers to determine if this hybrid model can reach the necessary scale for Tier 1 broadcasters.
Big Blue Marble's Nakolos demonstration sits within a broader push to make 5G Broadcast commercially viable across Europe. The 3GPP Release 19 specification, which introduces enhanced broadcast features including improved service announcement and reception modes, has been a focal point for broadcasters and network operators seeking to offload live video from unicast networks. TREDESS, a Spanish broadcast infrastructure provider, has been developing 5G Broadcast trial infrastructure in partnership with European public broadcasters to validate coverage and handover performance in real-world conditions. The IBC2026 showcase represents one of the first public demonstrations combining Release 19 broadcast capabilities with an IP-based failover protocol in a single integrated system.
The regulatory and standards landscape for 5G Broadcast hybrid delivery is evolving in parallel. The European Broadcasting Union has advocated for spectrum allocations that support broadcast-mode transmission alongside traditional mobile services, and the European Commission's connectivity strategy has identified 5G Broadcast as a tool for reaching underserved areas with live television without requiring individual SIM subscriptions. Meanwhile, the IETF's Media over QUIC working group has been finalizing transport specifications that define how media objects are published, subscribed to, and relayed across networks. The MoQ transport draft reached a milestone in mid-2026 when interoperability testing between multiple implementations was conducted at an IETF hackathon, signaling growing ecosystem readiness for production deployments. Big Blue Marble's decision to pair 5G Broadcast with MoQ rather than DASH or HLS reflects confidence that the newer protocol's pub-sub architecture better suits the low-latency failover scenario.
On the technical side, the sub-second switching between broadcast and broadband paths that Big Blue Marble claims addresses a long-standing challenge in hybrid delivery: session continuity during network transitions. Bitstem, one of the demonstration partners, has published research on QUIC-based media transport showing that connection migration features in QUIC can reduce handover latency compared to TCP-based streaming, which is critical for maintaining viewer experience during the switch from broadcast to unicast. The Nakolos platform's emergency warning capabilities also align with regulatory requirements in several European markets, where public alert systems must reach all connected devices regardless of subscription status. Johann Mika, who leads the Nakolos project, has presented prior work on integrating 3GPP broadcast service layers with internet-native transport protocols at ETSI workshops, positioning the platform as a reference implementation for operators evaluating Release 19 deployment timelines.
