Big Blue Marble will demonstrate a hybrid delivery system at IBC2026 that enables seamless switching between 5G Broadcast and Media over QUIC (MoQ). The demonstration will also feature the first end-to-end implementation of 3GPP Release 19 features for 5G Broadcast, alongside new emergency warning capabilities.
The ability to switch between broadcast and broadband without losing sub-second latency addresses a critical hurdle for live sports and emergency services. By utilizing 5G Broadcast for mass distribution and MoQ for targeted, low-latency recovery, operators can maintain service continuity without the overhead of dual-stream redundancy. This technical development signals a shift toward more commercially viable 5G deployments that prioritize bandwidth efficiency during peak demand. As the industry moves toward 3GPP Release 19 standards, the focus will shift to how quickly mobile device manufacturers integrate these hybrid switching capabilities into consumer hardware.
Big Blue Marble's Nakolos demonstration sits within a broader push to make 5G Broadcast commercially viable alongside emerging IP-based delivery standards. The 3GPP Release 19 specification, which introduces enhanced features for 5G Broadcast including improved emergency warning and hybrid delivery modes, was finalized in late 2025 after extensive testing by European broadcasters and chipset vendors, establishing the technical foundation that Big Blue Marble's switching demonstration builds upon. TREDESS, the Spanish broadcast infrastructure operator, has been among the earliest adopters of 5G Broadcast trials in Europe, running pilot services that informed the 3GPP standardization process. SYES, an Italian broadcast network operator, has similarly participated in field trials that validated one-to-many delivery over 5G spectrum for live television distribution.
The Media over QUIC (MoQ) protocol, which Big Blue Marble uses as the broadband fallback in its hybrid switching system, has gained significant traction within the IETF as a standardized approach to low-latency media delivery. The IETF MoQ working group published its transport protocol draft in early 2026, defining a pub-sub model for real-time media that multiple streaming platforms and CDN operators have begun prototyping. Bitstem, a Finnish media technology company, has contributed to MoQ implementations focused on live event distribution, aligning with the same use cases Big Blue Marble targets with its Nakolos platform. The convergence of 5G Broadcast and MoQ represents a strategic bet that broadcasters can serve mass audiences efficiently while maintaining the low-latency interactivity that broadband-only delivery provides.
Technical benchmarks for hybrid broadcast-broadband switching remain scarce, but adjacent deployments offer reference points. The European Broadcasting Union reported in mid-2026 that 5G Broadcast field trials across five countries achieved glass-to-glass latencies below 800 milliseconds for live linear channels, validating the sub-second targets that Big Blue Marble claims for its Nakolos system. Emergency warning integration, another feature in the IBC2026 demonstration, aligns with EU regulatory requirements under the European Electronic Communications Code, which mandates that member states implement public warning systems capable of reaching all connected devices. The combination of 3GPP Release 19 compliance, MoQ interoperability, and emergency alerting positions the Nakolos platform as one of the first end-to-end implementations targeting the full hybrid delivery stack that European regulators and broadcasters have been standardizing since 2023.
