BBC Studios has established a new Madrid-based unit to manage its channels and streaming operations across Spain and Portugal. The team, led by David Urgell Pérez, will focus on accelerating growth for the company's FAST and VOD services while deepening distribution partnerships with local operators.
Establishing a dedicated regional hub indicates that BBC Studios is shifting from passive licensing to active local management in high-growth territories. By placing veterans from Disney and SkyShowtime in Madrid, the company is positioning itself to compete directly for advertising revenue and premium placement on connected TV platforms like Titan OS and LG Channels. This move reflects a broader industry trend where content owners are localizing their executive teams to navigate fragmented European distribution landscapes. Watch for new carriage agreements with MasOrange and Movistar Plus+ as the team attempts to convert existing FAST channel momentum into deeper VOD penetration.
BBC Studios is entering an increasingly crowded Iberian FAST and streaming market where established US studios have already built significant distribution footprints. Paramount's SkyShowtime launched in Spain and Portugal in 2022 and has since expanded its local content slate, while Disney continues to operate Disney+ across both markets with localized content strategies that compete for the same operator shelf space BBC Studios now targets through its Madrid team. The competitive pressure from these platforms means BBC Studios must differentiate through its FAST channel portfolio and BBC Player VOD offering rather than relying solely on brand recognition. The broader European FAST market has seen rapid consolidation and partnership activity that shapes the landscape BBC Studios is entering. Movistar Plus+ has been actively expanding its FAST channel lineup as part of its strategy to retain subscribers amid rising churn, making it a critical distribution partner for any content owner seeking scale in Spain. Meanwhile, MasOrange, formed from the merger of Orange Spain and MásMóvil, represents one of the largest telecom operators in the country and a key gateway for FAST channel placement on connected TV devices. BBC Studios' decision to staff its Madrid unit with executives from Disney and SkyShowtime suggests the company recognizes that operator relationships in this market require dedicated local management rather than remote oversight from London. The technical and commercial model BBC Studios is deploying in Iberia mirrors strategies it has tested in other markets. BBC Player, the company's direct-to-consumer VOD service, has been available in select territories and serves as a complement to the FAST channels by offering premium content behind a subscription or ad-supported tier. The FAST channel model has become a primary growth vector for content owners across Europe, with advertising revenues projected to grow significantly through 2027, according to industry forecasts. For BBC Studios, the Madrid unit represents a bet that localized curation and operator partnerships can convert passive viewership of channels like BBC Earth and BBC Top Gear into measurable advertising yield and subscriber acquisition for BBC Player.
