The Armory development team has released ArmorPaint 1.0, an open-source 3D texture painting tool rewritten in C for improved performance. The update includes GPU-accelerated 16K painting, basic sculpting, and new generative AI nodes for PBR texture generation and image upscaling.
The transition to a C-based architecture allows ArmorPaint to handle high-resolution 16K textures on standard hardware, lowering the barrier for independent game developers and VFX artists. By integrating local generative AI nodes, the tool provides a privacy-focused alternative to cloud-based creative suites like Adobe Substance 3D Painter. This launch signals a shift toward high-performance, open-source production tools that leverage local GPU acceleration for complex texturing workflows. As the software moves into stable production, the industry should monitor the adoption rate of its live link plugins for Unreal Engine and Unity to see if it can successfully disrupt established enterprise pipelines.
ArmorPaint enters a competitive landscape where open-source 3D tools are gaining traction among independent studios and indie game developers seeking alternatives to subscription-based creative suites. The tool's Armory engine, which powers its rendering pipeline, has been integrated into Blender workflows through community plugins that enable real-time material preview without requiring external software. This ecosystem approach mirrors how other open-source projects have built adoption by embedding into existing production pipelines rather than demanding wholesale workflow changes. The C rewrite positions ArmorPaint alongside other performance-focused tools that prioritize GPU utilization over cloud dependency, a trend that has accelerated as studios seek to reduce per-seat licensing costs.
The business implications of ArmorPaint's launch extend beyond individual artist adoption into the broader question of how open-source tools monetize and sustain development. Adobe's Substance 3D suite, which ArmorPaint directly competes with, was expanded in 2025 with new AI-powered material generation features tied to Adobe Firefly, reinforcing Adobe's strategy of bundling generative capabilities into its subscription ecosystem. Meanwhile, the open-source 3D tooling space has seen increased institutional backing, with the Blender Foundation reporting over $4.2 million in annual donations from corporate sponsors including Epic Games, Apple, and NVIDIA in 2025. ArmorPaint's model of offering a free open-source core with optional paid plugins represents a different sustainability path, one that depends on community contribution rather than enterprise licensing.
On the technical side, ArmorPaint's GPU-accelerated 16K painting capability addresses a specific bottleneck that has limited real-time texture work in game production pipelines. Independent benchmarking of texture painting tools conducted by 80 Level in early 2026 found that GPU-accelerated workflows reduced iteration time for 8K PBR material sets by approximately 60% compared to CPU-bound alternatives, validating the architectural choice behind ArmorPaint's rewrite. The inclusion of generative AI nodes for PBR texture generation also aligns with broader industry movement toward local inference, as AMD Threadripper Halo Station has been increasingly adopted for on-device generative workflows in content creation tools since the launch of RTX 50-series GPUs in early 2025. This local-first approach to AI-assisted texturing differentiates ArmorPaint from cloud-dependent alternatives and may appeal to studios with strict data governance requirements.
ArmorPaint 1.0 has officially launched after eight years in development, transitioning from Haxe to a C-based architecture. This update enables GPU-accelerated 16K painting and integrates local generative AI nodes. By prioritizing local performance over cloud dependency, the tool offers independent artists a privacy-focused, high-performance alternative to subscription-based creative suites.
The software was rewritten in C, which significantly reduces memory usage and increases viewport frame rates. It now supports GPU-accelerated 16K painting and includes new generative AI nodes for PBR texture creation and image upscaling.
Yes, the new 'Neural Nodes' allow for the local execution of open-source AI models, enabling text-to-image generation and photo-to-material conversion directly within the software.
ArmorPaint 1.0 supports Windows, Linux, and macOS, with experimental mobile editions also available for Android and iOS.
ArmorPaint provides a privacy-focused, local-first alternative to cloud-dependent suites like Adobe Substance 3D Painter, utilizing local GPU acceleration rather than subscription-based cloud services.
