TVTEL has deployed Appear's X20 Platform to manage live signal transport for Chile's professional football VAR system. The infrastructure utilizes JPEG XS compression and SMPTE ST 2022-7 redundancy to provide low-latency, reliable video contribution between production centers and review facilities.
This deployment highlights the increasing shift toward centralized VAR operations, where low-latency transport is critical for maintaining the pace of live sports. By integrating high-density processing and IP gateway functions into a single chassis, TVTEL reduces operational complexity while meeting the ANFP's strict requirements for frame integrity. Within the broader streaming ecosystem, the move toward JPEG XS and SMPTE ST 2022-7 standards reflects a growing industry demand for resilient, high-fidelity contribution links that can support both traditional broadcasts and low-latency streaming applications. Watch for whether TVTEL expands this modular architecture to support full 4K remote production for international South American football tournaments.
Appear has been building momentum in live sports contribution with its X20 Platform across multiple markets. In early 2025, Appear announced that its X20 Platform had been selected by a major European broadcaster for centralized production workflows, reinforcing the platform's positioning as a modular edge-to-core solution for live event transport. The X20's support for JPEG XS (ISO/IEC 21122) aligns with a broader industry shift toward lightweight, visually lossless codecs for contribution links, a trend that the Video Services Forum highlighted in its 2025 interoperability guidelines for JPEG XS over IP. TVTEL's deployment in Chile represents one of the first confirmed VAR-specific implementations of the X20 in Latin America, a region where centralized refereeing infrastructure remains nascent compared to Europe.
The regulatory and business case for centralized VAR continues to gain traction among football governing bodies. FIFA's 2024 update to the VAR protocol explicitly endorsed centralized and semi-automated review models, encouraging member associations to consolidate review operations to reduce per-stadium hardware costs. In South America, CONMEBOL announced in March 2025 that it would expand VAR coverage to all Copa Libertadores group-stage matches, up from partial coverage in earlier rounds, creating demand for reliable contribution infrastructure across the continent. The ANFP's decision to centralize Chilean VAR operations through TVTEL's Machasa facility reflects this continental push, and EVS, whose Xeebra review system is integrated into the workflow, has similarly expanded its multi-platform sports production deployments to 14 leagues worldwide as of mid-2025.
On the technical side, JPEG XS has emerged as the preferred codec for sub-frame-latency video transport in sports production. The VSF's TR-07 specification, published in 2024, defines JPEG XS transport over SMPTE ST 2110 and ST 2022-7 networks, providing the exact redundancy model TVTEL uses for its Chilean VAR links. Independent testing by the EBU's technical team demonstrated that JPEG XS at 10:1 compression ratios maintains PSNR above 50 dB for 1080p50 sports content, confirming visually lossless quality suitable for frame-accurate refereeing decisions. Appear's X20 Platform integrates JPEG XS encoding and decoding with SMPTE ST 2022-7 seamless protection switching in a single 1RU chassis, a density advantage that noted when covering Appear's IBC 2025 demonstration of 32 simultaneous JPEG XS channels in a single appliance.
