Nielsen's May 2026 'The Gauge' report shows streaming reaching 48.6% of US television watch-time, with YouTube hitting a record 13.8% share. The report highlights shifts in viewing habits, including cable news declines and the impact of live sports, as the industry prepares for new currency metrics.
The continued expansion of streaming share at the expense of linear cable—particularly in the heavy-hitting news genre—signals a permanent shift in affiliate economics and carriage leverage. YouTube’s widening lead over traditional media giants like Disney and NBCUniversal solidifies its role as the dominant 'default' video layer on the living room screen. However, because these figures measure total watch-time rather than the tradeable ad-supported audience, the primary tension remains the 'currency gap' between sheer engagement and actual B2B monetization. Markets should watch the August 31 deployment of Nielsen's seven currency metric changes, which will finally reconcile these share figures with the data used for ad transactions.
The May figures arrive during a period of massive consolidation and measurement friction. In June 2026, Fox Corp. announced a $22 billion deal to acquire Roku, a move aimed at doubling Fox's annual connected TV advertising revenue by combining its live sports portfolio with Roku's operating system and 100 million household reach, per CBS News. This transaction follows the completion of Comcast’s Versant separation in January 2026 and its subsequent June 2026 announcement to spin off NBCUniversal and Sky into a standalone media company. Collectively, these moves reflect a market where distributors are decoupling legacy broadband units to focus on streaming-first profitability.
Simultaneously, Nielsen is under intense scrutiny to stabilize its measurement framework. On August 31, 2026, the company is scheduled to deploy seven mandatory currency enhancements—including latency adjustments and co-viewing models—required by the Media Rating Council to maintain its accreditation, according to the Video Advertising Bureau (VAB). This deployment follows a highly publicized dispute in March 2026, where the VAB accused Nielsen of suppressing February data that temporarily showed linear television ahead of streaming under a different demographic baseline. The Fall 2026 television season will serve as the first major test for these reconciled metrics as the industry attempts to close the 'currency chasm' between total watch-time and ad-supported spend.
