YouTube has updated its connected TV app to include episodic show formatting for creator playlists, dedicated podcast tabs, and new account security features like four-digit locking. These updates aim to improve navigation and engagement for the platform's one billion daily hours of CTV viewership.
These updates signal YouTube's aggressive move to capture traditional linear TV viewing habits by adopting episodic structures and dedicated show pages. By mimicking the navigation of premium SVOD services, the platform aims to increase session duration for its one billion daily CTV hours. This shift places YouTube in direct competition with Netflix and Disney+ for 'lean-back' living room engagement rather than just short-form mobile clips. The addition of account-level locking also addresses a long-standing friction point for shared household devices, potentially improving recommendation accuracy. Watch for whether these episodic formats lead to higher ad completion rates as viewers transition from browsing to binge-watching creator series.
YouTube's connected TV dominance continues to attract advertiser budgets at scale. A Pixability survey of 288 media agency professionals found that 62% of US agencies and 85% of UK agencies plan to include YouTube in their connected-TV ad buys this year, while a separate Tinuiti study based on actual ad spending data showed that 67% of US YouTube campaigns purchased in Q4 2025 were attributed to TV screens. That advertiser momentum aligns directly with the episodic show formatting and dedicated podcast tabs now rolling out in the CTV app, since structured content surfaces give agencies clearer brand-safety signals and longer session durations to justify premium CPMs.
On the monetization side, YouTube is testing dynamic insertion of host-read ads within individual videos, a feature that would allow podcasters to swap sponsorships the way Spotify and Apple Podcasts already do. CEO Neal Mohan's 2025 letter explicitly committed to rolling out more tools for podcasters and improving creator monetization. The company has paid out $70 billion to creators, media companies, and partners over the last three years, and Alphabet reported that YouTube generated $60 billion in total revenue for the 2025 financial year, up 17% year over year, with CTV consumption cited as a major driver of advertiser interest. The new episodic show formats and podcast vertical lineups give YouTube additional levers to convert that scale into higher-value ad inventory.
Podcast viewing on connected TVs is the fastest-growing content category fueling YouTube's CTV engagement. Alphabet disclosed during its Q4 2025 earnings call that viewers watched over 700 million hours of podcasts on living room devices in October 2025, up 75% year over year. YouTube also launched podcast vertical lineups for advertisers covering five categories: Sports, News, Comedy, True Crime, and Society & Culture, following the same bundling model as YouTube Select. A Q4 2025 Edison Research report found that YouTube (including YouTube Music) is the most frequently used service for podcast listening among weekly US podcast listeners at 41.2%. These formats and ad products create the structural conditions for the episodic show pages to function as both discovery surfaces and premium ad environments on the big screen.
