DTM has deployed Riedel’s Easy5G private 5G platform as a permanent infrastructure for transmitting onboard camera signals across its race car fleet. The system utilizes a 100 MHz bandwidth to support high-resolution video transmission and is designed to scale for future production requirements.
The shift from temporary RF setups to permanent private 5G infrastructure provides a more reliable and scalable method for capturing high-bandwidth onboard footage. By utilizing a dedicated 100 MHz spectrum, DTM and TV Skyline bypass the congestion of public networks while reducing the physical hardware footprint required at each circuit. This deployment signals a broader move toward software-defined, digitally connected race cars that can support increasingly data-heavy broadcast requirements. As the industry moves toward more immersive fan experiences, watch for whether other Tier 1 racing series adopt similar private cellular architectures to replace traditional microwave links.
Riedel Communications has been building its Easy5G platform as a dedicated solution for live production environments where traditional RF and microwave links face congestion and reliability challenges. The DTM deployment represents the first permanent installation of the platform in a racing series, but Riedel has previously demonstrated Easy5G in other live-event contexts. TV Tech reported that the DTM deployment achieves uplink data rates of up to 140 Mbit/s using only four to seven antenna locations per circuit, a footprint that is significantly smaller than traditional microwave relay setups required for multi-car onboard coverage. The topography-optimized network design means the system can adapt to circuits with varying elevation and layout without requiring additional spectrum allocation.
The business implications extend beyond a single series. Advanced Television noted that DTM Managing Director Claudia Wagner framed the deployment as the foundation for new content formats and sustainable business models in motorsports, suggesting that the private 5G infrastructure is intended to support monetization beyond traditional broadcast rights. TV Skyline, as DTM's long-standing production partner, identified the onboard camera limitation as a specific technical bottleneck that private 5G could resolve, according to CEO Wolfgang Reeh. The Porsche Sixt Carrera Cup Germany, which runs alongside DTM events, already integrates 24 different camera angles into its production using the same infrastructure.
From a technical standpoint, Riedel's DIVA+ system provides the underlying data, intercom, video, and audio backbone that connects the Easy5G wireless layer to the production compound. TVBEurope reported that the architecture was designed for scalability from the outset, providing the technical foundation for additional camera angles and higher data volumes. This positions the system to accommodate future requirements such as 8K onboard feeds, additional telemetry overlays, or real-time data integration that would demand even greater uplink capacity than the current 140 Mbit/s configuration.
