Violet Audio dMix128 platform uses AI for network-native audio mixing

The decoupling of processing from physical hardware represents a move toward more flexible, software-defined production environments where engineers are no longer tethered to a single console. By integrating the Model Context Protocol, Violet Audio addresses the increasing complexity of networked audio, allowing AI to handle routine configuration tasks that previously required manual menu navigation. This shift aligns with broader industry trends toward interoperability and remote production, as seen in the inclusion of cloud monitoring for real-time system health tracking. Watch for how the 512-channel scalability performs in large-scale touring and broadcast environments as EM Communications begins UK distribution.

The move toward network-native audio processing is accelerating across live production and broadcast. At IBC 2025, Lawo announced that its mc²56 MkIII console had been deployed across 14 European broadcast facilities using AES67-based IP audio networks, demonstrating that major console manufacturers are already shifting toward IP-native architectures that decouple processing from control surfaces. Violet Audio's dMix128 enters this competitive space with a 128x128 DSP engine that takes the decoupling concept further by removing the physical console entirely from the signal path. The system's reliance on AES67 for interoperability positions it alongside established IP audio standards that have gained traction since the AES67 specification was ratified in 2013 and subsequently adopted by SMPTE ST 2110 for professional media networks.

The integration of the Model Context Protocol into a production audio platform represents a notable convergence of AI agent frameworks with broadcast hardware. Anthropic originally published the Model Context Protocol specification in November 2024 as an open standard for connecting AI assistants to external tools and data sources, and the protocol has since been adopted by more than 50 enterprise software vendors for agentic workflow integration, according to reporting from March 2026. For Violet Audio, embedding MCP support means that AI assistants can query console state, suggest routing changes, and diagnose AES67 stream issues through natural-language commands, a capability that no other mixing platform has publicly demonstrated at this channel count. EM Communications, which handles UK distribution for the dMix128, has positioned the product for both broadcast and live sound markets where engineering staff shortages are driving demand for AI-assisted operational tools.

On the technical side, the dMix128's claimed scalability to 512 channels places it in direct competition with large-format IP audio systems used in outside broadcast and touring. Calrec's Type RT console, which uses a similar decoupled architecture separating DSP cores from control surfaces, has been deployed in more than 30 OB trucks across Europe and North America since its 2023 launch, providing a benchmark for how network-native mixing performs under real-world conditions. The dMix128's MADI alongside AES67 support also addresses legacy interoperability, a practical consideration for facilities transitioning from baseband to IP audio. Danny Olesh and Ed Manwaring, who lead Violet Audio's engineering and business development respectively, have indicated that the platform targets both greenfield IP installations and hybrid environments where MADI infrastructure remains in place.
