Solid State Logic is preparing to demonstrate its Virtual Tempest Engine at IBC2026, focusing on software-defined audio production workflows aligned with the EBU’s Dynamic Media Facility project. The updates include support for containerized functions and hybrid on-prem/cloud deployments, alongside new hardware like the Net I/O ST 2110 Bridge.
The shift toward software-defined production marks a critical pivot from proprietary hardware to flexible, COTS-based infrastructure. By virtualizing the audio engine and adopting the EBU’s MXL standard, SSL reduces the 'appliance tax' and enables broadcasters to spin up processing resources dynamically. This reflects a broader ecosystem move where interoperability and lower capital expenditure take precedence over traditional hardware-bound stacks. The immediate result is increased operational agility for live events and remote production. Watch for further adoption of the MXL SDK by major video routing and playback vendors to see if a truly vendor-neutral, software-defined control room becomes the new baseline for Tier-1 broadcasters.
The transition to software-defined production is accelerating as industry standards reach maturity. Per TVBEurope, the Media eXchange Layer (MXL) moved to a stable 1.0.0 production release in March 2026. This open-source SDK, hosted by the Linux Foundation, is a cornerstone of the EBU’s Dynamic Media Facility (DMF) architecture. It addresses the high-performance interchange of uncompressed video and audio between containerized software functions, a process that traditionally required significant CPU overhead. By using shared memory for same-host transfers, MXL minimizes latency, which is essential for live broadcast environments.
Broadcasters are increasingly prioritizing these vendor-neutral frameworks to avoid proprietary lock-in. According to TV Technology, the 2026 NAB Show highlighted a shift where linear IP video is now combined with on-prem and cloud workflows to operate as a single unified system. Major vendors like Grass Valley and Sony are reporting an inflection point in market adoption for software-defined production, driven by the need to scale resources for a packed global sports calendar without purchasing dedicated one-off hardware.
Complementary platforms like Techex’s tx darwin are also expanding the software-defined ecosystem. Per Techex, the platform launched 50 new modules in April 2026, including native MXL integration and consumer multiview tools for live sports. The integration of SSL’s audio engines with these cloud-native transport and monitoring frameworks illustrates the industry's move toward a modular, 'best-of-breed' software stack where audio, video, and metadata functions are treated as interchangeable microservices rather than fixed physical assets.
