Minnesota cable operator Sjoberg's Inc. is deploying InCoax Networks' MoCA Access technology alongside Nokia's Gigabit Connect to deliver multi-gigabit broadband to 40 apartment buildings. The project utilizes existing coaxial infrastructure to extend fiber-based services, managed through the Nokia Altiplano Access Controller and TruVizion diagnostics platform.
This deployment demonstrates a pragmatic path for smaller operators to compete in the high-density residential market without the prohibitive costs of internal fiber retrofitting. By utilizing the Nokia Altiplano Access Controller, Sjoberg's Inc. achieves operational parity between its fiber-to-the-home and coaxial-based MDU services, simplifying the management of a fragmented access network. For the broader streaming ecosystem, these hybrid architectures accelerate the availability of multi-gigabit bandwidth necessary for high-bitrate 4K and 8K content delivery in older urban housing stocks. Watch for whether other regional Tier 2 and Tier 3 operators adopt similar MoCA Access strategies to defend their MDU footprints against national fiber overbuilders.
InCoax Networks has been building momentum for MoCA Access as a brownfield broadband solution across multiple operator tiers. In March 2026, InCoax announced a multi-year agreement with a major European operator to deploy MoCA Access across thousands of MDU units, marking one of the largest commitments to the technology outside North America. The company's MoCA Access 2.5 specification supports aggregate throughput of up to 2.5 Gbps over existing coaxial cabling, positioning it as a cost-effective alternative to full fiber retrofits in buildings where internal rewiring is structurally or financially prohibitive. Nokia's Gigabit Connect platform, which integrates with the Altiplano Access Controller used in the Sjoberg's deployment, has been central to making these hybrid fiber-coax architectures operationally manageable at scale.
The business case for MoCA Access MDU deployments is being reinforced by competitive pressure from fiber overbuilders targeting multi-dwelling units. Nokia reported in its Q2 2026 earnings that its fixed networks division saw double-digit growth in access controller shipments, driven in part by operators seeking to defend MDU footprints without capital-intensive internal fiber builds. The MoCA Alliance, which certifies interoperability for MoCA-based products, has expanded its membership to include chipset vendors and gateway manufacturers, signaling broader ecosystem readiness. For smaller regional operators like Sjoberg's Inc., the economics are particularly compelling: industry estimates suggest that in-building fiber retrofitting can cost $1,500 to $3,000 per passing, while MoCA Access solutions typically run at a fraction of that cost per unit.
Technical performance data from independent testing supports the viability of MoCA Access for streaming-heavy workloads. InCoax published results from a 2025 field trial showing sustained throughput of 1.8 Gbps over 200-meter coaxial runs in a multi-story residential building, with latency below 2 milliseconds at the access layer. The Nokia Altiplano Access Controller provides unified management across both fiber and coax segments, enabling operators to apply consistent quality-of-service policies regardless of the last-meter medium. For streaming video delivery, this means that 4K HDR streams requiring 25 to 50 Mbps per household can be served reliably even in buildings where the internal distribution layer remains coaxial, removing a key bottleneck that has historically limited service tiers in older MDU stock.
