Salem Media engineer uses Sonobus and Zoom for remote production

The adoption of Sonobus and Zoom hardware by Salem Media signals a shift where consumer-grade IP technology matches the reliability of specialized broadcast codecs at a fraction of the cost. By virtualizing the studio and utilizing standard internet connections like Starlink, 5G, and Behringer X32, broadcasters can maintain high-quality production standards without the logistical burden of traditional satellite or dedicated line infrastructure. This hybrid infrastructure model allows smaller stations to execute complex, multi-camera concert productions that were previously cost-prohibitive. Watch for whether professional hardware manufacturers respond by lowering entry-level pricing or adding more native IP-streaming features to compete with these free software alternatives.

Sonobus has emerged as a serious alternative to traditional hardware codecs for live audio contribution. The open-source, low-latency audio networking application gained traction among broadcast engineers during the pandemic and has since been adopted by stations seeking to reduce reliance on dedicated ISDN or IP codec hardware. Comrex, a leading manufacturer of broadcast codecs, has acknowledged the competitive pressure from software-based alternatives by continuing to update its Access line with improved IP connectivity features, though the company has not publicly addressed Sonobus by name. Meanwhile, Zoom expanded its PodTrak product line to target podcasters and broadcast engineers who need multi-channel recording and live mixing in portable form factors, positioning the P4 as a sub-$300 solution for field production that previously required rack-mounted gear costing several thousand dollars. The broader shift toward IP-based remote production tools reflects economic pressures across the radio and podcasting industries. Nokia and AWS have been building cloud-hosted control layers for autonomous network operations, demonstrating how telecom infrastructure providers are investing in the network reliability that makes consumer-grade IP contribution viable for broadcasters. For smaller operators like Salem Media, the cost equation is decisive: a Zoom PodTrak P4 retails for approximately $250, while a Comrex Access codec costs upward of $3,000, and dedicated satellite uplink time for remote broadcasts can run $500 or more per hour. The DHD MX3 audio console, another tool in Gladding's kit, has similarly disrupted the live-sound market by offering 32-channel digital mixing at a price point that undercuts legacy console manufacturers by 60 to 70 percent. Technical performance data supports the viability of these low-cost tools for professional broadcast use. Sonobus achieves latency figures as low as 2.7 milliseconds on a local network and typically under 50 milliseconds over wide-area internet connections, which falls within acceptable thresholds for live radio contribution. Ericsson launched its AI in RAN commercial software subscription in June 2026, claiming up to 20 percent higher downlink throughput across more than 15 live deployments, improvements in network capacity that directly benefit IP-based audio contribution workflows. The convergence of improved mobile network performance, affordable multi-channel interfaces like the PodTrak P4, and free software like Sonobus is creating conditions where the technical gap between consumer and professional broadcast tools continues to narrow, particularly for audio-first applications where latency tolerance is more forgiving than video.
