IRIS.TV and Publica Integrate Video-Level Contextual Data for CTV Direct Deals

IRIS.TV and Publica Integrate Video-Level Contextual Data for CTV Direct Deals
Publica

IRIS.TV has partnered with Publica to integrate its video-level contextual data platform into the Publica CTV Ad Server. This integration allows publishers and linear buyers to perform direct ad targeting and forecasting based on specific content data.

Key Takeaways

  • Publishers can now use IRIS-enabled data segments for direct deal targeting and forecasting within the Publica ad server.
  • The integration provides specific content-level transparency, moving beyond traditional app-level and self-declared genre data.
  • Partners XUMO and Cinedigm are utilizing the technology to offer advertisers granular targeting across more than 200 premium channels.
  • The partnership aims to capture linear television budgets by providing the transparency and control traditional TV buyers expect.

Why It Matters

This integration bridges the gap between digital programmatic efficiency and the granular transparency required by traditional linear TV advertisers. By moving targeting from the app level to the individual video level, publishers can better justify premium CPMs and mitigate brand safety risks. As U.S. CTV ad spending is projected to surpass $30 billion by 2025, tools that provide deeper content attribution will be critical for platforms competing for shift-spent from broadcast. Watch for whether other major ad servers, such as Google Ad Manager or FreeWheel, accelerate their own video-level metadata integrations to remain competitive in the direct-sold market.

Additional Context

The push for video-level transparency comes as the industry grapples with 'signal loss' and fragmented measurement. Per AdExchanger in early 2024, the IAB Tech Lab has been refining OpenRTB standards to include more granular content objects, specifically to address the opacity that has historically plagued CTV buying. Advertisers have grown increasingly vocal about knowing exactly which shows their ads appear in, rather than just the platform or genre. This demand is driven by a need to avoid high-risk content and to manage frequency more effectively across different streaming environments. Simultaneously, the supply-side is consolidating around sophisticated tech stacks. Integral Ad Science (IAS), which acquired Publica for $220 million in August 2021, has been aggressively folding contextual capabilities into its suite to differentiate from standard verification services. According to a June 2023 report from Digiday, publishers are prioritizing 'first-party data clean rooms' and contextual signals as third-party cookies depreciate, even in the cookie-less CTV environment. By leveraging IRIS.TV’s neutral ID system, Publica allows publishers to synchronize their metadata with buy-side requirements without exposing raw viewer data. Market competition for contextual AI is also intensifying. Per a March 2024 analysis from eMarketer, competitors like GumGum and Peer39 have expanded their CTV footprints, using computer vision to analyze frames for logos, objects, and sentiment. The IRIS.TV and Publica partnership specifically targets the workflow friction of direct deals, which still account for a massive portion of upfront commitments. As streaming services like Netflix and Disney+ scale their ad tiers, the ability to prove 'broadcast-quality' environments through automated, video-level data will be the baseline for any premium ad server.
