IdeaNova, Cadami Partner to Build In-Cabin CDNs via Passenger Devices

IdeaNova, Cadami Partner to Build In-Cabin CDNs via Passenger Devices
APEX (Airline Passenger Experience Association)

IdeaNova and Cadami have partnered to create a software-based system that turns aircraft cabins into local content delivery network (CDN) hubs. The solution combines IdeaNova's Inplay Edge caching technology with Cadami's STACHUS distributed storage platform to improve onboard streaming performance by caching content across passenger devices. This approach aims to reduce reliance on limited satellite bandwidth for both licensed in-flight entertainment and OTT streaming.

Key Takeaways

  • The system combines IdeaNova's Inplay Edge caching platform with Cadami's STACHUS distributed storage to create a software-defined media network inside the aircraft.
  • By distributing content across passenger displays and other devices, the platform handles streaming demand locally, easing pressure on costly satellite connectivity.
  • The solution is entirely software-based, allowing airlines to upgrade streaming performance on existing hardware without major retrofits.
  • Cadami’s underlying STACHUS platform has already been deployed on more than 700 aircraft since 2017, validating the distributed storage concept.
  • The model supports both traditional licensed IFE libraries and OTT streaming platforms.

Why It Matters

This partnership offers airlines a software-based method to manage onboard streaming demand without continuously scaling expensive satellite bandwidth. By treating the cabin as a distributed edge network, it improves performance for both IFE and OTT content during peak usage using existing hardware. This model addresses the core conflict between rising passenger expectations and the operational unsustainability of adding more bandwidth, providing a path to modernize the passenger experience on existing cabin systems. The crucial next step is the first airline deployment of the combined platform, testing this integrated in-cabin CDN architecture in a live environment.
