Crunchyroll rejects AI for localizing anime, eyes global IP expansion

Crunchyroll rejects AI for localizing anime, eyes global IP expansion
outlookindia

Crunchyroll President Rahul Purini outlined the company's content strategy, emphasizing creator-driven storytelling and the identification of internationally appealing anime titles. He explicitly stated that Crunchyroll does not use AI for dubbing, subtitling, or creative processes, although they are exploring AI for discovery and personalization. Purini highlighted titles like 'Witch Hat Atelier' and 'Daemons of the Shadow Realm' as examples of content aimed at global audiences.

Additional Context

Crunchyroll's firm stance against AI localization follows a series of high-profile industry setbacks. Per Engadget in July 2025, the platform faced intense fan backlash after localized subtitles for 'Necronomico and the Cosmic Horror Show' were found to contain 'ChatGPT said' artifacts. Crunchyroll attributed the error to a third-party vendor violating its agreements, an incident that underscores the difficulty of maintaining quality control over a global supply chain. This controversy was shortly followed by the temporary appearance of experimental 'AI beta' English dubs on Crunchyroll’s Amazon Prime Video channel in late 2025, which were quickly removed after rights holders like Kadokawa and Sentai Filmworks clarified they had never authorized machine-generated voices (per SciFiction, December 2025). Financially, the niche streamer has become a critical engine for its parent company, Sony Group. Per Sony’s May 2026 earnings reporting, Crunchyroll officially surpassed 21 million paid subscribers, a significant climb from the 15 million milestone reported in August 2024. This growth has occurred alongside a major strategic shift: the platform ended its long-standing ad-supported free streaming tier on December 31, 2025, moving toward a pure SVOD model supplemented by targeted price updates introduced in February 2026 (per expandedramblings, May 2026). To sustain this momentum, Crunchyroll is leveraging Sony’s broader ecosystem through the 'One Sony' initiative. The upcoming 2027 'Ghost of Tsushima' anime is the most ambitious example yet, uniting PlayStation Productions, Sony Music, and Aniplex for a cross-media production. Industry analysts at Bernstein recently noted that Crunchyroll and Netflix together control over 80% of the $3.7 billion overseas anime streaming market, a sector projected to reach $16 billion by 2030 (per Parrot Analytics, March 2025).
