Cobalt Digital adds direct fiber I/O to Dante audio processors

Broadcasters face increasing complexity as they bridge uncompressed SDI with ST 2110 and IPMX networks. By integrating fiber I/O directly into the processing card, Cobalt reduces the failure points and physical footprint associated with external media conversion in remote production. This hardware-centric approach supports the industry's broader shift toward JPEG XS as a standard for high-quality, low-bandwidth contribution. The addition of JXS TDC ensures multi-vendor interoperability as facilities scale software-defined production architectures. Watch for whether rival openGear manufacturers adopt similar specialized fiber inputs to match this density in the second half of 2026.

The broadcast industry's shift toward IP-based operations has accelerated as SMPTE ST 2110 received a Television Academy Engineering Emmy in 2025, according to Mediasys. This transition involves separating video, audio, and metadata into independent essence streams, a move that requires precise timing via Precision Time Protocol (PTP). Despite the benefits of flexibility and scalability, many facilities maintain hybrid environments due to the high bandwidth requirements of uncompressed 4K signals, which can consume up to 12Gbps per stream, per PacketStorm in March 2026. This reality has fueled the adoption of JPEG XS for low-latency compression at ratios between 2:1 and 10:1. Cobalt Digital has secured significant market momentum leading into IBC2026. The blueCORE platform, which anchors the company's hybrid SDI/IP strategy, earned "Best of Show" awards at both NAB 2026 and InfoComm 2026, per reports from AVTechnology and TVBEurope. These accolades reflect a broader trend where vendors are prioritizing 1RU, low-power hardware that can handle multiple functions—such as up/down/cross conversion and HDR processing—within a single unit. Per APB-News in May 2026, the push for IPMX (Internet Protocol Media Experience) is also bridging the gap between professional broadcast and Pro AV markets by standardizing how high-quality media travels over standard Ethernet. Interoperability remains the primary hurdle for large-scale IP deployments. Recent collaborations, such as the integration of intoPIX’s TicoXS FIP codec into Cobalt’s Sapphire and Indigo lines, highlight the industry's focus on standardized JPEG XS profiles. Per intoPIX in February 2026, the inclusion of Temporal Differential Coding (TDC) is critical for maintaining visual fidelity during multi-generational encoding cycles. This technical maturity allows broadcasters like the BBC and Telemundo to transition to IP without the operational risk of proprietary silos, as noted in ongoing industry tracking by MainConcept in June 2026.
