Cloud DR playout goes live for Latvian national broadcaster LTV1

Cloud DR playout goes live for Latvian national broadcaster LTV1
Veset

Telia implemented a cloud-based disaster recovery playout solution for Latvian Television's LTV1 channel using the Veset Nimbus platform on Telia's Cloudy Servers infrastructure. The 100% cloud-based DR solution eliminates upfront hardware costs and allows remote web-based access to playout operations. The deployment was announced in July 2019.

Key Takeaways

  • LTV1 DR playout runs entirely on Telia Cloudy Servers with Veset Nimbus — no physical backup hardware required
  • LTV CIO Ilana Einmane cited zero upfront cost, minimal workflow disruption, and no ongoing physical maintenance as primary decision factors
  • Veset Nimbus supports channel delivery to OTT/CDN, satellite, terrestrial, and IPTV distribution platforms
  • Veset, founded in 2011, was among the first companies to deploy native cloud-based playout for TV channel origination

Why It Matters

The LTV1 deployment demonstrates that cloud-native DR playout can serve a national broadcaster's primary channel without duplicating physical infrastructure. This pay-per-use SaaS playout model on a telco-hosted cloud lowers the barrier for broadcasters still running hardware-based primary playout but needing redundant failover capability. Watch whether additional national broadcasters adopt cloud-only DR for flagship channels rather than maintaining physical backup facilities.

Additional Context

Veset has continued expanding its cloud playout and DR footprint well beyond the original LTV deployment. In May 2025, Veset announced that Telekom Malaysia migrated ten regional TV channels to the cloud using Veset Nimbus on AWS, transitioning from hardware-based broadcasting to a cloud-native model (per Veset, May 2025). The company also integrated JPEG XS and Multicast networking into Nimbus in April 2025, adding low-latency live production and multi-channel feed distribution capabilities to the platform (per Veset, April 2025). More recently, Mexican broadcaster TV Azteca deployed Veset Nimbus on AWS as a disaster recovery playout solution for its adn40 network, directly echoing the LTV use case but at a larger commercial broadcaster scale (per Veset, January 2026). Veset also launched a self-service subscription portal in November 2025 and by early 2026 reported 213 customer trials signed up through the new facility (per Veset, 2026), indicating growing demand for frictionless cloud playout procurement. The broader cloud DR playout category has attracted multiple competitors. Grass Valley's AMPP platform now powers cloud-native disaster recovery for Asharq News, which launched DR channels for its History and Discovery services in June 2025 and added its flagship News service in October 2025, all as a predictable monthly SaaS expense without on-premises management (per Grass Valley, October 2025). Amagi's CLOUDPORT on AWS offers hot, warm, and cold DR configurations with sub-one-minute recovery time objectives in multi-AZ deployments (per AWS Partner Network blog, 2024). Separately, Telia Norway adopted Synamedia technology to reduce cloud DVR service costs by up to 95% in March 2024, illustrating that telco-hosted cloud video infrastructure continues to evolve on both cost and capability axes (per Synamedia, March 2024).
