Industry leaders from Zixi, Appear, and Imagine Communications report that broadcast infrastructure challenges have shifted from IP connectivity to managing operational observability and complexity. The transition toward software-defined, distributed, and cloud-reliant production necessitates better orchestration tools to maintain reliability across heterogeneous multi-vendor environments.

Add as preferred sourceThe transition to IP solved the distance problem but introduced a transparency crisis; engineers can no longer physically trace signals through a maze of multicast streams and software-defined routes. For the streaming ecosystem, this indicates that the next phase of maturity is not about new protocols, but about the 'IT-ification' of the stack where observability determines uptime. Success now depends on whether heterogeneous systems from vendors like Cobalt Digital and Riedel can be integrated into a single, observable data center model. Watch for the commercial adoption of MXL v1.0.0 as a signal that broadcasters are moving beyond simple IP transport toward truly integrated software processing pools.
The shift toward observability comes as the IP broadcast infrastructure market is projected to grow from $14.8 billion in 2025 to $34.6 billion by 2034, per DataIntelo (April 2026). This growth is increasingly driven by software-defined workflows rather than hardware replacement. A New Relic survey from September 2025 noted that 54% of engineering leaders have now moved to intelligent observability, up from 42% in 2024, specifically to manage the hidden failures inherent in distributed, AI-powered environments.
Concurrent with this, the Linux Foundation and EBU released the MXL v1.0.0 candidate in early 2026, providing a stable API for vendors to build commercial software-native production tools. According to Nevion (June 2026), these tools are not intended to replace SMPTE ST 2110 but to reduce the 'packet density' friction that makes cloud-native integration difficult. By treating media transfers as memory-to-memory operations rather than network streams, MXL addresses the latency and resource overhead that has previously slowed the transition from specialized hardware to shared compute clusters.
Furthermore, Haivision’s 2025 Broadcast Transformation Report found that while 86% of broadcasters use cloud technology, nearly half still rely on it for less than 25% of their workflows. This persistence of hybrid models reinforces the industry's need for orchestration tools that can span on-premise and cloud nodes. Industry stalwarts including the BBC and CBC are currently piloting these Dynamic Media Facility models to scale live sports coverage beyond the physical capacity of traditional outside broadcast trucks.
