FOX Sports utilized Appear's X Platform to manage contribution and production for all 104 matches of the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The deployment involved 60 JPEG XS TR-07 paths and 26 HEVC paths connecting the International Broadcast Center in Dallas with the PICO facility in Los Angeles.
The successful delivery of 104 matches across three countries demonstrates the reliability of JPEG XS TR-07 for high-stakes, low-latency sports contribution at a massive scale. By utilizing a modular hardware platform to bridge the International Broadcast Center in Dallas with production hubs in Los Angeles, FOX Sports has established a blueprint for distributed production in major international tournaments. This shift toward high-density IP contribution reduces the need for massive on-site production crews while maintaining broadcast-grade quality. As the industry moves toward more flexible remote workflows, watch for how other major rights holders adopt similar FPGA-driven processing to handle the increasing volume of concurrent 4K and HDR feeds required for global events.
Appear's X Platform deployment for the 2026 FIFA World Cup sits within a broader industry shift toward JPEG XS TR-07 for high-density live sports contribution. The codec, standardized under SMPTE ST 2110-22, has become the preferred transport format for broadcasters seeking low-latency, visually lossless video over IP without the bandwidth overhead of uncompressed signals. Appear has positioned its modular hardware as a bridge between traditional baseband workflows and fully IP-native production, a strategy that aligns with the tournament's distributed architecture spanning venues across the United States, Mexico, and Canada. The company's X Platform supports both JPEG XS and HEVC processing on the same chassis, giving broadcasters flexibility to mix legacy and next-generation contribution paths within a single deployment. The competitive landscape for JPEG XS contribution hardware has intensified as broadcasters prepare for major events. Ericsson and Nokia are diverging like never before on AI-RAN, a dynamic that indirectly affects how broadcasters plan IP contribution over managed networks, since AI-driven network automation promises more deterministic quality-of-service guarantees for time-sensitive video traffic. Meanwhile, Nokia combined with AWS and Databricks to build a telco AI control layer announced at DTW Ignite in June 2026, positioning its Autonomous Network Fabric as an orchestration platform that could underpin the kind of guaranteed-bandwidth paths broadcasters need for JPEG XS contribution across wide-area networks. These infrastructure moves matter because distributed production workflows like FOX Sports' World Cup setup depend on predictable network performance between geographically separated facilities. On the technical side, the World Cup deployment's use of 60 concurrent JPEG XS paths represents one of the largest single-event deployments of the codec for live sports contribution. Ericsson launched its AI in RAN commercial software subscription on June 11, claiming up to 20% higher downlink throughput across more than 15 live deployments, signaling that network-side intelligence is maturing fast enough to support the deterministic transport requirements that JPEG XS contribution demands. Ericsson's CTO Erik Ekudden highlighted that uplink traffic could triple over the next five years, driven by AI glasses, persistent voice interaction, sensors, and real-time video, a trend that will only increase pressure on contribution infrastructure as broadcasters push more simultaneous feeds from remote venues. The convergence of higher uplink demand, AI-optimized transport, and JPEG XS adoption suggests that the distributed production model FOX Sports validated at the World Cup will become the default architecture for future global events. As broadcasters adopt hybrid infrastructure models, the reliance on these flexible, software-defined contribution paths will only continue to grow.
