The Independent Film & Television Alliance (IFTA) is launching the 'AFM House and Innovation Hub' at the American Film Market in Los Angeles this November. The venue will feature a dedicated marketplace for AI and technology tools designed for film and television production and distribution.
The inclusion of a dedicated AI marketplace at AFM signals a shift from treating technology as an experimental peripheral to an essential component of the independent film business model. By formalizing the presence of AI startups, IFTA provides a critical bridge between software developers and traditional distributors who are under pressure to optimize production costs and audience targeting. This integration reflects a broader ecosystem trend where the value of film rights is increasingly tied to efficient, tech-enabled pipelines. For streaming professionals, the success of this hub will be a leading indicator of how quickly AI-assisted workflows will move from boutique projects to mainstream independent catalogs. Watch for specific adoption announcements from mid-sized distributors following the November networking sessions.
The expansion at the American Film Market coincides with a period of rapid institutional investment in film-specific AI. According to Market.us (May 2025), the global AI in film market was valued at roughly $1.8 billion in 2024 and is projected to reach $14.1 billion by 2033 as studios prioritize cost reduction in labor-intensive processes like CGI and color correction. This economic pressure is evident in recent high-profile partnerships, including Lionsgate’s August 2026 deal to train AI models on its internal content library to streamline pre-production and VFX workflows. Institutional adoption is also accelerating through direct capital injections. In June 2026, Google and A24 announced a $75 million research partnership focused on applying AI to the filmmaking process, while Netflix reportedly acquired the AI-focused startup InterPositive for $587 million in July 2026. These moves suggest that major players are shifting away from cautious observation toward a 'seat at the table' strategy to control the technology's implementation. While production tools dominate the current AI landscape, theatrical exhibition is also undergoing a technological reset. MarketIntelo data from June 2026 valued the global theatrical market at $47.3 billion, with a projected 5.2% growth rate through 2034. This growth is increasingly dependent on premium, tech-heavy experiences such as immersive audio and LED surfaces, which IFTA’s new Cinemas Club aims to address. As streaming budgets flatten, the independent sector is banking on these technological integrations to maintain the competitive value of theatrical windows.
