Vivid Broadcast, World Archery, and QTV are detailing their adoption of tiered live sports production workflows that leverage SRT, HEVC, LEO satellites, and cellular bonding. These companies are shifting away from traditional broadcast-grade requirements toward flexible, resilient transport models to improve agility and manage costs in varied connectivity environments.
The shift toward tiered contribution signifies a strategic pivot from 'perfect' connectivity to 'managed' resilience. For rights holders, this decouples production value from physical infrastructure, allowing niche sports to achieve professional delivery at a fraction of traditional satellite costs. By prioritizing SRT and HEVC over mezzanine codecs for mid-tier work, operators can scale remote workflows without the overhead of dedicated fiber. As LEO satellite constellations like Amazon Leo mature, the industry will likely see a full democratization of live sports backhaul. Watch for the 2026 rollout of LEO Nano and Pro terminals to see if they can maintain sub-second latency in congested urban environments.
The transition toward IP-based contribution reflected in this report aligns with broader industry data. Per Haivision’s 2025 Broadcast Transformation Report, SRT usage grew to 77% of broadcasters, surpassing RTMP as the dominant transport protocol. Additionally, HEVC adoption reached 70%, driven by its efficiency in 4K and HDR workflows. This shift is particularly visible in sports federations; for example, World Archery transitioned to an all-IP production model in early 2025, utilizing Appear’s X Platform to centralize operations in Lausanne, which the organization reported had a payback period of just 18 months.
Technological flexibility is also expanding through the growth of Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellite services. Per Orbital Radar and The Guardian in mid-2026, Amazon rebranded its Project Kuiper to 'Amazon Leo,' aiming to launch over 1,600 satellites by the end of 2026 to compete with SpaceX’s Starlink. Early sports adopters, including the DP World Tour, have already begun deploying Amazon's Nano and Ultra terminals to secure high-speed, low-latency connectivity for tournament venues, further reducing reliance on legacy satellite trucks.
On the regional level, dedicated managed networks remain critical for high-stakes implementations like Video Assistant Referee (VAR) systems. Per BT and SVG Europe reporting from 2022 to 2026, QTV’s partnership with BT Media and Broadcast’s Vena network has supported over 200 matches per season for the Scottish Professional Football League. This software-defined network provides the 10Gb resilience required for six-camera VAR vision paths, illustrating that while public internet and LEO are gaining ground, managed fiber remains the bedrock for tier-one sports compliance.
