In an interview with Sports Video Group, Victory+ Chief Engineer Corbin Perkins discusses the regional sports streaming platform's migration to IP-based workflows. Perkins explains how the service utilizes open-source protocols like SRT and public internet lines for contribution, significantly driving down live remote production costs.
The move to SRT and public internet contribution shifts the cost economics of regional sports networks (RSNs) by removing reliance on expensive satellite and dedicated fiber links. This technical agility allows smaller, high-engagement sports properties to scale their digital footprint without the capital-intensive requirements of legacy broadcasting. For the broader ecosystem, Victory+ validates a model where direct-to-consumer streaming is not just an additive feature, but a primary production strategy that leverages cost-effective open-source standards. Watch for whether other independent RSNs adopt similar software-defined transmission stacks to combat the declining margins of traditional linear distribution.
The transition seen at Victory+ follows a broader market shift as traditional regional sports models continue to fragment. Per The Hockey News in May 2025, Victory+ owner A Parent Media Co. (APMC) successfully increased the Anaheim Ducks' viewership by over 150% through its hybrid digital and over-the-air approach. While the Dallas Stars and Ducks are offered for free as ad-supported services, APMC has adjusted its model for other partners. Per Sports Business Journal in January 2025, the Texas Rangers joined the platform under a paid model, signaling that even high-growth streaming platforms must balance free accessibility with revenue-driven content windows based on league-specific distribution rights.
Technically, the use of Secure Reliable Transport (SRT) has become the industry benchmark for low-latency video. Per TV Technology in August 2025, SRT has evolved from a niche tool into a primary contribution protocol that allows broadcasters to maintain broadcast-grade redundancy and error correction over unmanaged IP networks. This shift is critical as platforms like Victory+ manage high-volume schedules; for example, Business Wire reported in March 2026 that the service reached a record 342,000 concurrent viewers for a single Dallas Stars matchup. The ability to support such spikes without expensive fixed infrastructure highlights the operational efficiency of the IP-first strategy Perkins emphasizes.
