Viaplay Allente platform upgrade integrates AI set-top boxes across Nordics

This deployment signals a shift toward hardware-software integration that prioritizes user experience over simple content aggregation. By utilizing AI-enabled set-top boxes with dedicated neural processing, Viaplay is betting that reduced friction between linear and OTT environments will drive retention in the competitive Nordic market. This move reflects a broader industry trend where legacy pay-TV providers adopt Android TV to maintain their position as the primary HDMI input while accommodating third-party streaming rivals. Watch for whether this unified interface leads to higher engagement metrics for Viaplay’s proprietary apps compared to the integrated third-party services.

Allente, the joint venture between Viaplay Group and Telenor serving roughly 3.5 million pay-TV subscribers across Scandinavia, has been steadily modernizing its platform stack since its formation in 2020. The 3Ready platform from 3 Screen Solutions (3SS) has become a key enabler for operators seeking to unify linear and on-demand experiences without replacing their entire headend. 3SS announced in June 2026 that 3Ready now powers more than 30 service providers with a total reach exceeding 70 million users, with blue-chip operators including A1 Telekom Austria Group, Allente, Altibox, Proximus, Tele2, TELUS, and Vodafone Group among its customers. Allente's decision to pair 3Ready with SDMC's AI-enabled set-top boxes reflects a broader trend among Nordic operators to differentiate on user experience rather than content exclusivity alone. The business case for such platform upgrades is sharpened by intensifying competition in the Nordic streaming market. Viaplay Group reported significant subscriber declines in its streaming segment during 2024 and 2025, prompting a strategic pivot toward profitability over growth. Meanwhile, Allente faces pressure from direct-to-consumer services like Netflix, Disney+, and HBO Max, all of which have expanded their Nordic content libraries aggressively. The integration of third-party apps into the Allente interface is a defensive play: by becoming the aggregation layer, Allente aims to remain the default entry point for household viewing even as individual streaming subscriptions fragment. 3SS launched its 3Ready Content Bundle at CES in January 2026, offering a production-ready entertainment ecosystem with 2,000+ Hollywood movies, 25+ global news providers, and 15+ sports channels, demonstrating the company's push to simplify content licensing and integration for operators across devices. On the technical side, 3SS has continued to layer AI capabilities onto the 3Ready platform that underpins Allente's upgraded interface. 3SS introduced 3Ready Hero Search in June 2026, an AI-powered semantic search feature that interprets user intent through natural-language interaction rather than keyword matching, aggregating results from both operator and third-party content sources with deep links. The feature is LLM-agnostic, proven interoperable with OpenAI and Gemini models, and is currently in a proof-of-concept deployment with a major European telco. This approach reduces latency for content suggestions and enables privacy-compliant personalization, a consideration that carries weight under the EU's General Data Protection Regulation. The combination of 3SS's software intelligence layer with SDMC's AI hardware mirrors the direction operators are heading: by making content discovery feel effortless across linear and on-demand environments.
