Varnish Software has launched Ora Streaming, a managed private CDN-as-a-service designed for high-concurrency live events and VOD platforms. The offering utilizes dedicated bare-metal infrastructure and local NVMe-based persistent caches to mitigate resource contention and origin load issues common in public CDN environments.
The shift toward private CDN-as-a-service addresses a critical failure point for major broadcasters: the unreliability of shared infrastructure during unpredictable traffic spikes. By moving logic like token verification and manifest manipulation to a dedicated edge, engineers can reduce latency-inducing external calls. For the broader ecosystem, this signals a move away from generic web-asset caching toward specialized, video-first delivery stacks. The industry's ability to handle multi-million concurrent viewer events without origin crashes is now a baseline requirement rather than an aspirational goal. Watch for whether high-volume OTT providers favor this managed 'capacity-based' pricing over traditional per-gigabyte billing models as live sports migration accelerates.
The launch of Ora Streaming follows a strategic alliance between Varnish Software and Intel, which was publicly detailed in April 2025. Per StreamingMediaBlog (April 2025), the solution was initially designed to run on Intel-optimized bare-metal servers hosted within the networks of major carriers, including Lumen and Telekom Malaysia. This partnership aimed to provide multi-terabit scale for broadcasters while leveraging Varnish Enterprise's proprietary performance features. The service became economically viable for customers delivering a minimum of 20 petabytes per month, targeting the mid-to-high end of the streaming market.
In August 2025, Varnish expanded the Ora Streaming footprint into the EMEA region, as reported by SVG Europe. This expansion focused on regional data sovereignty and regulatory compliance, addressing the specific needs of European broadcasters who require localized infrastructure to meet strict data residency rules. At IBC 2025, Varnish and Intel showcased the platform's ability to hit throughput rates of 1.5 Tbps per server, highlighting energy efficiency metrics of 1.4 Gbps per Watt to appeal to sustainability-focused operators.
Recent market data from Mordor Intelligence (July 2026) projects that the live streaming segment will grow at a CAGR of 10.78% through 2031, outpacing other streaming types due to the migration of premium sports rights. This surge in demand for low-latency delivery has driven a broader shift in the vendor landscape. Per CDNGuru (August 2026), Varnish's recent product strategy—including the 2026 release of its Kubernetes Gateway API implementation—reflects a pivot from selling software licenses to offering managed operational outcomes. This aligns with a 2026 market trend where hybrid REMI production models are increasingly adopted as bare-metal cloud spending is expected to reach $13.6 billion as enterprises seek to bypass the performance overhead of traditional virtualization.
