Streaming ad tech consolidation turns independent platforms into proprietary gardens

The shift toward 'performance' CTV is creating a strategic mismatch where delayed, cumulative brand influence is being judged by compressed digital attribution windows. As independent platforms aggregate supply, identity, and measurement data, they risk replicating the opacity of the walled gardens they intended to replace. This consolidation makes it harder for buyers to independently audit optimization logic or verify the quality of underlying signals. For the ecosystem, the primary concern is that scaling broken identity linkages only replicates targeting errors with greater confidence. Watch for a shift in buyers demanding error-rate disclosures from identity vendors similar to existing viewability standards.

The consolidation of data and identity assets has accelerated as agencies and platforms race to build proprietary alternatives to third-party cookies. Per AdAge and Marketing Brew, Publicis Groupe's March 2025 acquisition of the data platform Lotame allowed it to integrate 1.6 billion IDs into its Epsilon-powered 'CoreAI' system, targeting a reach of 91% of internet-connected adults. This move followed a pattern of high-value data acquisitions, including Publicis' earlier $4.4 billion purchase of Epsilon. Meanwhile, WPP finalized its acquisition of data clean room InfoSum in April 2025 for an estimated $150 million, per Digiday and MediaPost. This deal integrated InfoSum into WPP’s GroupM unit to power its 'WPP Open' operating system, a move designed to facilitate secure first-party data collaboration for clients like Disney and Netflix.

On the platform side, the 'new gardens' are moving deeper into the hardware layer to capture first-party signals. The Trade Desk officially announced its Ventura smart TV operating system in November 2024, with Jeff Green positioning it as an objective alternative to existing systems from Roku, Amazon, and Google. Per Axios and VideoWeek, the OS is expected to roll out in late 2025 through partnerships with OEMs such as Hisense and Toshiba. Simultaneously, Viant Technology has completed a 'trifecta' of acquisitions to build a vertical stack. Following its purchases of iris.tv for content metadata and Lockr for identity, Viant closed a $40 million acquisition of TVision Insights in May 2026. Per TV Technology, this integration allows Viant to natively use second-by-second eyes-on-screen attention data to drive automated bidding within its own platform.
