SportsNet Pittsburgh streaming growth hits 150% as Pirates deal extends

The network's ability to scale paid subscribers while traditional RSNs collapse suggests that high-performing local markets can sustain a hybrid cable and direct-to-consumer model. By using dynamic ad insertion and aggressive original programming, SportsNet Pittsburgh is successfully capturing a younger, affluent demographic that has abandoned the linear bundle. This performance contrasts with the broader trend of MLB and NHL teams moving toward centralized league-led distribution. As the Penguins transition to new ownership under the Hoffmann Family of Companies, the network's financial health provides a blueprint for localized sports media profitability. Watch for the outcome of MLB labor negotiations, which remain the primary hurdle for the Pirates' 2027 broadcast schedule.

SportsNet Pittsburgh operates within a shrinking regional sports network landscape where most competitors have either filed for bankruptcy or been absorbed into league-owned distribution. The network's parent, Fenway Sports Group, acquired the RSN assets formerly known as AT&T SportsNet Pittsburgh in late 2023, and the rebranded SportsNet Pittsburgh launched its direct-to-consumer streaming service in early 2024, offering a standalone subscription option alongside traditional cable carriage. That DTC launch positioned the network alongside a small cohort of RSNs experimenting with hybrid distribution, including the New England Sports Network, which Fenway Sports Group also controls. NESN has pursued a similar direct-to-consumer strategy, launching NESN 360 as a standalone streaming product in 2024 to reach cord-cutting fans across the Red Sox and Bruins broadcast territories. The business model SportsNet Pittsburgh is testing sits at the center of a broader RSN economics debate. Diamond Sports Group, which operated 19 regional networks under the Bally Sports brand, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in March 2023 and subsequently restructured as Main Street Sports Group, shedding multiple MLB and NBA broadcast deals in the process. That collapse forced MLB to step in with centralized streaming for several affected markets. Meanwhile, the NHL and MLB have both explored league-level direct-to-consumer packages as alternatives to traditional RSN carriage fees, signaling that centralized distribution remains a live option for teams whose local networks cannot sustain themselves. SportsNet Pittsburgh's 150% subscriber growth provides a counterargument: that locally branded networks with strong market loyalty can still generate meaningful revenue outside the bundle. On the technology side, dynamic ad insertion has become a critical tool for RSNs attempting to monetize streaming audiences at rates competitive with linear. SportsNet Pittsburgh's implementation mirrors approaches used by other sports broadcasters seeking to replace declining cable ad revenue. Magnite live sports ad spend has jumped 56% as thousands of advertisers join, signaling that broadcasters are successfully leveraging programmatic tools to capture demand. The Hoffmann Family of Companies, which acquired the Pittsburgh Penguins in 2025, brings additional media and entertainment assets that could deepen SportsNet Pittsburgh's original programming pipeline. Geoff Hoffmann has signaled interest in expanding the network's content beyond live game broadcasts, a strategy that aligns with how NESN has used studio shows and documentary content to retain subscribers between seasons. As the continues to evolve, these regional networks are increasingly looking toward to offset the decline of traditional cable carriage.
