Sony launches Live TV on PS5 using gamer data for ads

The launch of Live TV on PS5 represents a strategic shift to monetize the 'dark' hours when console users are not actively gaming but remain in front of the primary living room screen. By utilizing PlayStation Network login data, Sony offers advertisers a level of behavioral targeting—such as gaming genres and digital purchases—that traditional FAST platforms cannot easily replicate. This move positions Sony to capture ad spend from a demographic that typically avoids linear television and traditional connected TV environments. Watch for the upcoming expansion to Bravia TVs to see if Sony can successfully unify its hardware ecosystem under a single ad-supported content hub.

Sony's entry into free ad-supported streaming television (FAST) on PlayStation 5 places it in direct competition with established console-based streaming efforts. Microsoft has operated a similar ad-supported channel lineup on Xbox since 2023, and Samsung TV Plus and Roku Channel continue to dominate the FAST market with combined monthly active users exceeding 100 million across smart TV ecosystems. Sony's differentiation lies in its access to PlayStation Network behavioral data, which includes game purchase history, play-time patterns, and subscription status, giving advertisers targeting signals unavailable on generic smart TV platforms. The company's installed base of approximately 95 million PS5 consoles represents a captive audience that spends significant time on the device beyond active gaming sessions. The ad-tech infrastructure supporting Live TV on PS5 reflects broader consolidation in connected TV advertising. PubMatic, which provides programmatic ad serving for the platform, reported in its Q2 2026 earnings that connected TV revenue grew 42% year over year, driven by increased demand from performance marketers seeking addressable audiences on streaming platforms. Publica, the ad server handling Sony's inventory, was acquired by PubMatic in 2023 specifically to expand into CTV and gaming environments. This vertical integration of ad-tech capabilities mirrors the strategy employed by Roku, which operates its own demand-side platform alongside its ad-supported content offering, and by Amazon, which bundles Freevee advertising with its first-party shopping data. The technical architecture of Live TV on PS5 also positions Sony to expand its streaming ambitions across its hardware ecosystem. Sony Pictures Television has signaled plans to bring the service to Bravia smart TVs, which would unify Sony's living-room devices under a single unified streaming platform. Sony's broader media strategy has increasingly emphasized cross-platform content distribution, with the company's film and television division generating over $11 billion in annual revenue as of fiscal year 2025. The move also aligns with industry trends where hardware manufacturers are becoming content aggregators, following the playbook established by Samsung, LG, and Roku in the smart TV space. For advertisers, the key question is whether Sony's gaming-derived behavioral data can deliver measurable lift compared to the contextual and demographic targeting available on competing FAST platforms. As the industry seeks to unify linear and streaming ads, Sony's proprietary data advantage may prove decisive.
