Sony FX5 cinema camera debuts with 5K Open Gate and internal RAW

The inclusion of a 5K Open Gate sensor directly addresses the industry's shift toward simultaneous horizontal and vertical content delivery. By integrating internal X-OCN RAW recording into a compact body, Sony is lowering the technical barrier for small crews to produce high-fidelity assets that were previously reserved for larger camera systems like the FX6 or Venice. This move pressures competitors to standardize internal RAW workflows in mid-range production hardware. Watch for the upcoming firmware update to see if the promised 5K 120 fps capability maintains thermal stability in the FX5's smaller chassis.

Sony's Cinema Line has expanded rapidly since the original FX3 launched in 2021, and the FX5 now sits between that model and the FX6 in the company's production hierarchy. Sony introduced the FX5 as part of its Cinema Line expansion at Cine Gear Expo 2026, positioning it as a bridge between run-and-gun mirrorless hybrids and full-size cinema bodies. The camera's 5K 3:2 Open Gate sensor and internal X-OCN RAW recording represent features that previously required stepping up to the FX6 or Venice 2, signaling Sony's intent to compress its product tiers and capture single-operator professional production who need deliverables for both broadcast and social platforms.

The competitive landscape for compact RAW-capable cameras has intensified over the past year. Blackmagic Design shipped the Cinema Camera 6K with internal BRAW recording at a sub-$3,000 price point, directly challenging Sony's mid-range positioning. Meanwhile, Canon updated its EOS C80 with a firmware package enabling 6K RAW internal capture and improved autofocus tracking, narrowing the gap between Sony's autofocus advantage and Canon's Dual Pixel system. These moves suggest that internal RAW recording at accessible price points is becoming table stakes rather than a differentiator, which raises the stakes for Sony's thermal management and codec implementation in the FX5.

On the technical side, X-OCN RAW is Sony's proprietary intermediate codec that sits between uncompressed RAW and compressed formats like XAVC. Sony published documentation detailing X-OCN's data-rate tiers and its compatibility with DaVinci Resolve Studio's native decode pipeline, noting that the LT variant delivers visually lossless quality at roughly 60 percent of the data rate of uncompressed 16-bit RAW. Independent testing by CineD measured the FX5's rolling shutter at 8.2 milliseconds in 5K Open Gate mode, placing it among the fastest-readout sensors in its class and making it viable for handheld and gimbal work without the skew artifacts that plague slower sensors. The camera's ability to record internally at up to 5K 60p, with a promised firmware path to 120p, positions it as a practical tool for productions that need both cinematic depth and high-frame-rate coverage from a single body.
