SMPTE has opened registration for its 2026 Media Technology Summit in Pasadena, which will feature the debut of a new Media Tech Business Forum. The four-day event will focus on market intelligence, AI, sustainable media workflows, and advanced imaging technologies for space exploration.
The introduction of a business-strategy forum signals SMPTE’s pivot to bridge the gap between engineering standards and the commercial realities of a fragmented streaming market. By integrating NASA-led imaging discussions, the society is also positioning media technology as a critical infrastructure for adjacent sectors like space exploration. For the ecosystem, this reflects a move to ensure that technical innovations in AI and sustainability are aligned with studio P&L goals. Watch for the mid-year 'plugfest' results for the Catena protocol, which will serve as a bellwether for industry-wide adoption of open-source control plane standards.
The 2026 summit arrives as SMPTE aggressively expands its role in governing emerging technologies. Per SMPTE reports from July 2026, the organization’s Study Group on AI in Media has produced two major reports, ER 1010 and ER 1011, which have already spawned standards projects for AI model metadata and centralized model registries. These efforts coincide with the SMPTE 110th Anniversary Campaign, launched in July 2026 to fund strategic initiatives that democratize access to standards and support 'responsible innovation' in generative models.
Interoperability remains a core focus as the industry shifts toward cloud-native architectures. In January 2026, the SMPTE Open Services Alliance (OSA) released initial documents for the Catena suite (ST 2138), an open-source protocol designed to standardize the control plane for media devices. According to OSA leadership, a critical 'plugfest' is planned for mid-2026 to test multi-vendor interoperability of ST 2138, a data point that will likely inform the business-strategy sessions at the November summit.
Furthermore, the summit's emphasis on content provenance reflects broader industry concerns regarding generative AI. Per SMPTE communications in early 2026, the society is working alongside the C2PA to develop authentication manifests that verify media authenticity. This technical work is increasingly viewed as a necessary 'trust layer' to combat deepfakes and protect creative rights, particularly as the Artemis II mission and other 2026 lunar launches generate high-stakes global imagery that requires verified provenance.
