UK broadcaster Narrative Entertainment has partnered with NAGRAVISION to deploy the cloud-native OpenTV ENTera platform. The integration aims to unify first-party viewer data, improve content discovery, and streamline onboarding to connected TV ecosystems like Freeview and YouView.
The deployment of OpenTV ENTera underscores a shift for independent broadcasters toward owning the full data stack to compete with global streaming giants. By unifying first-party viewer data, Narrative Entertainment aims to stabilize its advertising value as traditional linear impacts decline across the UK market. This move connects to a broader ecosystem trend where niche players must use advanced orchestration and AI-driven personalization to maintain viewer loyalty on fragmented connected TV platforms. Watch for whether this infrastructure upgrade leads to higher average viewing minutes on the Great! Player, which reportedly grew 39% in 2025.
The partnership comes at a critical juncture for Narrative Entertainment as it pivots from linear-first to digital-first distribution. Per C21 Media (November 2025), Narrative recently closed its Pop and Tiny Pop linear kids' channels due to a collapse in commercial value, moving that content exclusively to its streaming and FAST platforms. Despite these headwinds, the company’s Great! Network grew its share of commercial impacts by 5% in 2025, even as the broader UK broadcast market contracted. This growth was largely supported by the expansion of the Great! Player on Freeview and YouView, platforms where Narrative continues to deepen its footprint.
The UK free ad-supported streaming TV (FAST) market is experiencing rapid expansion but increasing competition for limited ad spend. According to Omdia data (April 2025), UK FAST revenue jumped 44% to $214 million in 2024, yet the sheer volume of new entrants—reaching 771 channels from 67 parent companies—has slowed the average growth per player. Narrative has countered this by launching specialized channels like Great! Mystery and Great! Real to target specific demographics. To sustain this trajectory, UK broadcasters are increasingly adopting cloud-native stacks like OpenTV ENTera, which NAGRAVISION launched on the AWS Marketplace in late 2025 to simplify migration for legacy providers.
Furthermore, the competitive landscape is tightening with the entry of global ad-supported services. Per IMARC Group reporting (August 2026), the UK streaming market is forecast to reach $25 billion by 2034, driven by high internet penetration which is expected to hit 98.4% of homes by 2026. The launch of the broadcaster-led platform Freely in April 2024 and the UK arrival of Tubi in July 2024 have increased the pressure on independent broadcasters to provide high-quality content discovery and robust monetization tools to secure their place in the connected TV interface.
