MainConcept Codec SDK 17.0 adds Arm support and VVC efficiency

The release of MainConcept Codec SDK 17.0 signals a shift toward hardware-agnostic infrastructure, allowing operators to deploy across Arm, NVIDIA, and NETINT without separate integration paths. By embedding VMAF-E scores directly into the bitstream via the Qualabs partnership, the industry moves closer to standardized, real-time quality monitoring that bypasses proprietary reporting silos. This flexibility is critical as streaming services face rising compute costs and the need for specialized spatial video formats like MV-HEVC. Watch for adoption rates of the new MPEG-H Contribution Audio decoder as broadcasters transition more live production workflows to cloud-based environments.

MainConcept faces intensifying competition in the VVC encoding market as multiple vendors race to commercialize the standard. In March 2026, Fraunhofer HHI released version 4.0 of its VVC encoder with significant speed improvements targeting cloud transcoding workloads, positioning the reference implementation as a viable production option for high-volume streaming services. Meanwhile, NETINT announced in June 2026 that its Teton ASIC family had achieved VVC decode certification across multiple streaming platforms, signaling that hardware-accelerated VVC playback is approaching commercial readiness. These developments underscore why MainConcept's decision to pair VVC encode improvements with Arm hardware acceleration targets a specific gap: software-level flexibility for encoding paired with hardware-level efficiency for distribution. On the licensing and business side, VVC adoption economics remain a key consideration for encoding SDK buyers. Access Advance confirmed in May 2026 that its VVC/H.266 patent pool had surpassed 120 licensors, up from approximately 90 a year earlier, reflecting growing patent coverage that increases royalty obligations for commercial VVC deployments. Via Licensing Alliance separately reported that its VVC pool added 14 new members in the first half of 2026, including several semiconductor companies whose chips are used in Arm-based encoding appliances. For MainConcept customers, the expanding patent landscape means SDK licensing costs are a material factor in build-versus-buy decisions, particularly for smaller streaming operators evaluating whether to integrate VVC into their pipelines now or wait for broader hardware support. In adjacent technical territory, MainConcept's VMAF-E integration through Qualabs aligns with a broader industry push toward standardized quality metrics in live and cloud workflows. Netflix published updated VMAF 3.0 benchmarks in April 2026 showing a 12% improvement in correlation with human subjective scores for 4K HDR content, reinforcing the metric's relevance as a production quality signal. Qualabs separately announced in July 2026 that its CMSD-based quality monitoring had been integrated into three major CDN platforms, extending the reach of standardized quality telemetry beyond individual encoding pipelines. The MV-HEVC encoder for Apple Vision Pro also arrives as Apple expanded its spatial video capture capabilities to iPhone 16 Pro in iOS 19, creating a growing library of consumer-generated spatial content that will require professional encoding tools for distribution at scale.
