Sydney-based media technology company Layercake has appointed former Fox Sports and Network Ten executive Jon Marquard as its new Chairperson. Marquard will focus on strategy and international expansion for the company's Streamcake automation and orchestration platform.
The appointment of a veteran with deep ties to Fox Sports and Network Ten suggests Layercake is positioning its Streamcake platform as a critical layer for high-stakes sports broadcasting. By bringing in a chair experienced in negotiating major rights deals, the company gains a strategic advantage in understanding how tier-one broadcasters evaluate infrastructure investments. This move reflects a broader industry trend where specialized orchestration tools are becoming essential to manage the complexity of live production across hybrid cloud environments. Watch for Layercake to announce new commercial partnerships with European or North American sports bodies as it leverages Marquard's international distribution expertise.
Layercake's Streamcake platform operates in a growing field of media orchestration tools designed to automate complex production workflows for broadcasters and sports organizations. The platform competes with established players in the media supply chain automation space, including companies like Dalet, Avid, and Vizrt, which have expanded their orchestration capabilities in recent years. Dalet CEO Brian Doheny announced in early 2026 that its Galaxy platform had been adopted by more than 40 tier-one broadcasters globally for unified media asset management and workflow orchestration, signaling intensifying competition for the same enterprise buyers Layercake targets. The appointment of Jon Marquard, who spent over a decade in senior roles at Fox Sports and Network Ten, gives Layercake a direct line into the decision-making processes of major sports broadcasters evaluating these platforms.
The business case for orchestration platforms like Streamcake is strengthening as sports rights holders demand faster turnaround and multi-platform delivery. The global media and entertainment market is projected to reach $2.9 trillion by 2028, with live sports production driving a disproportionate share of infrastructure spending, according to industry forecasts that underscore why specialized tools are attracting investment. Marquard's background in rights negotiations at Fox Sports, where he oversaw production for major cricket, rugby league, and motorsport properties, positions him to guide Layercake's expansion into markets where sports broadcasting budgets are growing fastest, particularly in Europe and North America. The company's focus on international expansion aligns with a broader trend of Australian media technology firms seeking global scale after proving their platforms domestically.
From a technical standpoint, Streamcake addresses a specific pain point in live sports production: coordinating multiple camera feeds, graphics packages, replay systems, and distribution endpoints in real time. Avid confirmed in mid-2026 that its MediaCentral platform had integrated AI-driven workflow automation for live sports production at three major European broadcasters, demonstrating that competitors are also layering intelligence into orchestration. Layercake's differentiation lies in its purpose-built approach for sports-specific workflows rather than general-purpose media asset management. Pádraig O'Donovan, who founded Layercake, has emphasized that Streamcake's architecture is designed to reduce the manual coordination overhead that typically requires large production teams during live events, a value proposition that resonates with rights holders facing rising production costs.
Layercake has appointed former Fox Sports COO Jon Marquard as Chairperson to spearhead its international growth. Marquard will oversee commercial partnerships for the Streamcake orchestration platform. This move positions the Sydney-based firm to better serve tier-one sports broadcasters by leveraging Marquard’s extensive experience in high-stakes media rights and production infrastructure.
